● According to city data, between 2007 and 2013, Oakland lost 68 percent
of its affordable housing funding
● Over the last two years, lack of affordable housing has contributed to a
26 percent rise in homelessness in Oakland.
● Of homes currently under construction, only 170 are affordable—about 6
percent—and 1,348 are either approved or in the entitlement process—
about 7 percent.
● Identifying optimal locations for future affordable housing will be key to

Education is crucial for low income families living in
affordable housing units.
● We analyzed 146 public schools making up the
Oakland Unified School District.
● The types of schools consisted of elementary
schools, middle schools, high schools and charters
schools.
● Out of 146 schools, only 12 (8%) are found within
walking distance of an affordable housing project.

tracts that had all four of our
desired attributes within walking
distance.
• This allowed us to determine the
few census blocks in Oakland that
would be suitable for new
affordable housing based on
walkability to our 4 necessary
amenities.
