1. 6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
We pride ourselves on being
good stewards of the land here on Kauai
and on being connected…
2. 6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
Our energy is extracted from the earth…
But far from our own shores
3. 6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
In a process that is
almost completely disconnected from us…
It is then delivered to our small island…
4. 6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
As it is burned in our power plants…
Most of us never even see it
5. 6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
And delivered instantly to our
homes and businesses…
Are we truly connected to our energy use?
6. 6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
We all rely on it…
but how often do we really think about it?
7. And now we are waking up to the
challenges of a changing world…
6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
8. Our community will undoubtedly respond…
6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
As it has in the past
9. So let us take heart in Hawaii’s rich
energy history…
6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
10. As well as in our recent accomplishments…
6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
11. 6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
But how we achieve it…
will have a tremendous impact on when we achieve it.
There is little doubt that we will
achieve a 100% clean energy future here…
12. The real challenge is to preserve both
what we value here on Kauai…
6/2/2014 Kauai Energy Transformation
And to live up to and perpetuate our values
in the global context
Editor's Notes
We talk about malama aina, and about being sensitive to the land and the culture.
And although we pride ourselves on preserving the beauty of our Island, we sometimes forget that our electricity use imposes a very high cost on other communities around the world. What does it mean to be a good steward to the land?

Today the electricity system, even on a small grid like Kauai, is complex and largely invisible in our daily lives even though it is all around us…

So are we connected? Over the last ½ century, have people on Kauai given much thought to electricity? Ironically, the one time we all seem to think about it is when it’s not there…
Our community came together to create an electric cooperative right around the time that major global forces began reshaping the utility industry…
With our co-op, our community has begun to take on numerous environmental and economic issues, and only one short decade into the process, our energy transformation is well underway…
Over the last few years, KIUC has begun to move aggressively towards a renewable energy future for Kauai. They expect to achieve almost 40% renewable energy by next year, and are being seen as a leading utility around the world.
Iolani Palace was electrified in 1882 under the direction of King Kalakawa. As many of you know, Iolani Palace had electricity before the White House in Washington or Buckingham Palace in England.
We owe a debt to those who took on the task of creating a utility cooperative for our communty.

We can either continue to ‘slug it out’ or we can come together and do the hard work to evolve a shared vision for our energy future. We are all ‘part of the problem’ when it comes to energy, and we can all be part of the solutions as well.
