Looking at Manukau from Paddocks until the Super City era began in 2010.
Why was Manukau founded and built in grass paddocks?
Service a new South Auckland, a decentralised Auckland and to service both the new Airport and new industrial complex in Wiri and East Tamaki
Manukau in 1959 before it was founded by Jim Anderton and Sir Roger Douglas, first mayor and builder was Sir Lloyd Elsmore to be continued by Curtis and finally Brown
Airport did not exist until the mid 60’s.
Manukau beginning its development as MCC came into being.
Southern Motorway only went as far as Redoubt Road before terminating at Takanini in the late 70s
Anchors were HNZ Building and the Mall
Mall would be extended in 1987-89 again in 2008 and again from 2019
Super City will come into being November 2010
Transition period
Auckland and Unitary Plans written and becoming operative (2012 and 2016)
But also at time of officials pushing a strong Pro City Centre argument and trying to erase the identity of places like Manukau.
Comments included: explosives should be used, Manukau should die a dignified death
