Updates
-People with dementia have a higher risk of getting COVID-19,
are more likely to require hospitalization, and are more likely to
have severe or fatal cases of this disease compared with people
without dementia. This risk is even higher in African American
patients with dementia.

Aging (nih.gov)
-The use of telehealth to reach dementia patients with limited
access to Dementia Care Specialists shows evidence of reducing
crisis situations and ER visits.

-UMN physician and neuroscientist Karen Ashe responded to a
bombshell Science report published last week, which alleges
that key images from one of the most cited research papers on
Alzheimer’s disease this century might have been intentionally
fabricated, throwing off years and hundreds of millions of
dollars worth of taxpayer-funded research.

A study showed that
Latino caregivers viewed
family centered home
care as a culturally
embedded value. It also
showed providers need
to understand the ways
in which caregivers must
negotiate the tension
between cultural beliefs
and the demands of their
individual
circumstances.

8. CARE PARTNERS
ANDALCOHOL
"The burden of caregiving can often lead to
isolation and loneliness, giving rise to alcohol
abuse. Caregivers can be more vulnerable to
alcohol abuse and how it plays into their attempts
to cope with stress and exhaustion associated with
caregiving."

11. Technology
The longest-standing use of technology in dementia is in
assessment. Two touchscreen-based cognitive assessment
batteries – Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery
and Examen Cognitif par Ordinateur were developed in Europe in
the 1980s and 1990s.
In terms of dementia diagnosis, there have been increasing
applications of various machine learning approaches, most
commonly with imaging data for diagnosis and disease
progression. This includes amyloid PET imaging, MR imaging and
combined PET and MR imaging.
The Big Data for Advancing Dementia Research project concluded
that big data could potentially accelerate dementia research and
technology development by helping recognize factors that
contribute to dementia, identifying individuals with dementia
earlier, promoting better support for dementia care and creating
new analysis methods (e.g., data mining) that could result in new
research opportunities

An online tool was created by National Institute of Aging and
National Institute of Health in hopes of getting more African
American and Hispanic dementia patients to participate in
clinical trials. The tool is called Outreach Pro.
