“We are eyeing for 30 per cent growth
for the next two years”
- BS Praveen, MD CEO, BAG Electronics (India) Private Ltd
What sort of opportunities you
sense through the structural shift
by the regime?
The major opportunity will come in
the outdoor sector and through
implementation of policies and new
technology will be available at
affordable prices. Technology like our
very own geoDIM will help with energy
conservation.
What are the potential drivers
for LED lighting in the years to
come?
Efficiency of LED compared to
conventional lighting is far better. The
LED has superior reliability, and its
quality is much better, in addition, the
lifetime of these products is also
substantially long. LEDs also
helps in energy savings.
What are the present trends
that you have witnessed or
are likely to witness in the
LED space? Where is the
demand coming from?
Currently, the major demand
is coming from outdoor, office and
commercial sectors. And, in the future
as the awareness increases, we will
witness a steady growth in the
general sector.
Can you tell us about the present
market size for LED and where it
will be in the next two years?
The present size of the LED
market, in the organised sector is
close to Rs 2,000 crore, out of which
the control gear market will be around
Rs 200 crore. It is probable to grow at
20-25 per cent in next two years.
How could retrofitting
conventional streetlight with LED
result in saving energy?
Almost by 50-60 per cent of energy
saving can be done through this as
maintenance for these products is
very low, provided that only good
quality LED products are used.
How much business you are
targeting for the next two years?
We are targeting to achieve LED
ECG business of about Rs 20 crore in
2015, and this is likely to increase by
30 per cent in next two years.
What focus does the company
put on RD for LEDs?
Very high focus. Our Indian
RD team works very closely
with the German RD team for
product developments and also
develops products for the European
market. The key objective of the
RD division is to develop quality
products at an affordable price
which will not only withstand the
Indian power conditions, but also
excel in it.
How much share of components
is procured from India and how
much is imported?
It’s about 75:25 as majority of the
component manufactures are not
from India and we have to rely heavily
on import. But with the new
government initiatives we see that
ratio coming down to 60:40.
Are you launching more LED
products this year? Do you plan
to diversify into other segments?
Yes, we have already launched
quite a few new products like ICD –
the output current of which can be
tuned from 250 mA to 900 mA. This
driver is available in two wattages of
60 W and 90 W. We are
planning on becoming a key
OLM (original luminaire
manufacturer) solution
provider. We also provide
high quality luminaire
assembly services to
our customers.
What LED products do
you manufacture? What is your
manufacturing capacity and its
utilisation?
We manufacture control gears for
luminaires including LED drivers and
ballast. We also provide solutions with
LED modules. The overall capacity is
3 million per year.
How do you contribute towards
developing the LED product
manufacturing ecosystem in
India?
We have a full-fledged RD
facility and a manufacturing facility
based in Pune. We are strong
believers that the ‘Make in India’
concept will work wonders, not only
for the lighting industry but also for
the entire country.
