Argumentative essay topic 3: Ethnic adoption is where couples adopt children
who are not of the same race / religion as the parents-to-be. But some might
argue that there are abandoned babies of the same race / religion as the
couples are that need to be adopted, and they should not be looking to other
“exotic” options. Should ethnic adoptions be encouraged in multiracial
Malaysia? Discuss with logical points and reasoning.
Adoptions are rather known as very touching action, people who adopts are inspiring
and affectionate, but ethnic adoptions are big problems, especially in Malaysia. I personally
think that adopting a child should not only be physically but also mentally. I strongly
disagree that ethnic adoptions should be encouraged in multiracial Malaysia. There should
be a lot of considerations such as, marriage when the kid grows up, cultural differences and
religious complications.
Marriage is one of the hinder when it comes to multiracial adoption. People would
tend to judge a book by its cover when they see a couple of two different races getting
married. They have the mindset that all yellow people are Chinese, tanned skin are all
Malays and all brown skin people are Indians despite their family backgrounds and such. It
would be difficult for the adopted one as his or her finance’s family might not allow the both
of them to get married.
Apart from the difficulties in marriage, cultural difference would also be an obstacle in
emotional wise. Self esteem in the sense that other kids would make fun of them being
different and again, of their skin color. In this case, let’s take a look at a scenario, an Indian
boy gets adopted by a Chinese family and goes to a Chinese school. His friends might
confront him and make fun of him. People are normally not comfortable with difference and
they are scared of it. Friends, family, acquaintances or strangers might make negative
comments and stare. This will let the child feel uneasy and sometimes insecure.
When adopting a child from a different race or culture or even religion, the child have
to let go of everything including their culture and religion especially in Malaysia. In Malaysia,
there is a law saying that no matter what you do or who you are, once you are married or
living with Muslims, you have to, no wait, you must convert unless you get married overseas
but at the end of the day, people still judge you when you return to Malaysia.
These problems would cause difficulties for the child that had been adopted, the
parents that adopt the child and the soul mate of that adopted child. In Malaysia, there are
rules that we have to follow. Different people look at things differently but I think that the
child’s rights are the most important above all. Their emotions are what we really need to
care about. There are the innocent one in this situation. I strongly disagree ethnic adoptions
especially in Malaysia. We must consider carefully before we adopt children who are not of
the same race.
