This document discusses stent therapy for coronary artery disease. Coronary angiography is an x-ray procedure that can detect narrowing of the coronary arteries. Coronary angioplasty is a procedure that opens blocked arteries to restore blood flow to the heart. A stent is a small expandable metal tube that is placed inside the artery to keep it open after it has been widened by angioplasty. The document also mentions a new drug-assisted stent that provides efficacy without long-term use of antiplatelet drugs.
4. INTRODUCION
Like any other living tissue heart muscles need oxygen and
blood supply for their functioning. The blood vessels that
supply blood and oxygen to the heart muscles are known
as coronary arteries. Cholesterol deposition on the wall
of this artery is called plaque. formation of plaques in the
blood vessel causes narrowing of the blood vessels. This
can affect one or more artery. When the artery get narrow
they are not able to supply adequate amount of blood and
oxygen to the pumping heart. This lack of oxygen in the
heart muscle cause chest pain or angina. When arteries
are narrowed in a excesses or when a blood clot forms
on the plaque the artery may become completely block
causing death of a part of the heart muscles. This is
known as heart attack
15. Coronary angioplasty is a medical
procedure which opens up the blocked
blood vessels, therefore restoring
blood flow to the heart muscles before
they become totally occluded.
