trees
1. I spent some time in the weekend
With a tree
And I learnt
A lot.
This tree was huge,
Strong and slightly overbearing
You would probably be able to see it from a long way away
Yet it wasn’t nerve-wracking talking to this tree
Because it was gentle, despite its grandeur
And I knew it would never judge me
Even the small squirrel
And the robin bird
Ran to it for shelter
And the tree embraced us all
With its branches open wide
And we all sat for a while
In beautiful silence
And even though to some
It would look like the squirrel had walked all over the tree
The tree still provides him with a home
And even though humans are the cause of many of its troubles
And I am a daughter of Adam
The tree still honoured me with shelter
I sat with my back to its trunk
And I looked on towards what was within its range of vision
And I imagined the day going by
Sunrise and sunset
And the night going by
And the week going by
And the season going by
And the year going by
And 30 years going by
And still the same place
The tree is overlooking the same place
And it suddenly hits me
Why I feel the tree has so much humility
Because without comment
It has watched life go by
It has watched the magnificence of the sunrise
And the sunset
Countless times before
It has watched the seasons go by
2. It has watched the people come and go
It has been sheltered by the stars
And covered by the snow
And blown away by the wind
All of which it did
In silence
Taking it all in.
This tree has been witness
To magnificence far greater than itself
To a world so perfectly designed
All of which
Left it humbled
Meanwhile we walk past heedlessly
Finally
I learn patience from the tree
Because it takes all the rubbish that people leave
And without sparing a word
It uses it to grow
(Provided its biodegradable)
And so, with a smile on my face
I looked at the sky
And sincerely promised that I would
Definitely
Spend more time
With trees
