Formosa was founded in 1879 by Jorge Luis Fontana.
He was born in Buenos Aires on 19th April 1846. At age thirteen, Fontana entered the
Military Command of Río Negro as a trainee; he later fought in the Paraguayan War.
After the war he lived in Buenos Aires, he studied natural sciences, astronomy, and
physics.
In 1879 he founded the city of Formosa, and he was awarded the rank of lieutenant
colonel.
The lands were initially inhabited by Toba and Wichí (Mataco) aboriginals. On April 8,
1879 Commander Luis Jorge Fontana founded the settlement that would become the
capital of the National Territory of Chaco from 1884 to June 15, 1955, when bringing the
status of province.
