History
Formosa was founded in 1879 by Jorge Luis Fontana.
He was born in Buenos Aires on 19th April 1846. At age thirteen, Fontana entered the
Military Command of Río Negro as a trainee; he later fought in the Paraguayan War.
After the war he lived in Buenos Aires, he studied natural sciences, astronomy, and
physics.
In 1879 he founded the city of Formosa, and he was awarded the rank of lieutenant
colonel.
The lands were initially inhabited by Toba and Wichí (Mataco) aboriginals. On April 8,
1879 Commander Luis Jorge Fontana founded the settlement that would become the
capital of the National Territory of Chaco from 1884 to June 15, 1955, when bringing the
status of province.
 The name of the city (and the province)
comes from the archaic Spanish word
fermosa (currently Hermosa) meaning
"beautiful". The name Vuelta Fermosa or
Vuelta la Formosa was used by Spanish
sailors in the 16th century to describe the
area where the Paraguay River makes a
turn, right in front of the actual city.

 Formosa today
 The city is a few hundred meters away from
Paraguay across the river. It has a culture closer
Paraguayan. The city's well-known cultural
institutions include the Formosa Regional Historical
Museum, the Juan Pablo Duffard Historical Museum,
the Qom Toba Artisanal Museum, and the Oscar
Albertazzi Arts Institute.
 The city has many beautiful places for tourists.
Formosa has an international hotel like, the Howard
Johnson Neo Formosa, with a casino and shopping
gallery.
 Formosa celebrate festivals like Nuestra Señora del
Carmen on 16th July in honor of its holy day.
 It also celebrates festivals of the “El Pomelo”, “La
Covina” and “Carnival”.
 Visit Formosa at any time!!!
