How do you convey that feeling of perfect clarity that comes when you get that really incredible idea? While there’s no app for that (yet), there is an essential business tool that you can use to communicate your idea to the world—the elevator pitch.
2. Why do I need a good elevator pitch?
Helps you translate your idea into something close to a mission statement
Inspires listeners to want to learn more about your idea
No matter where you are in the mobile app process, you should
always have your elevator pitch ready!
3. Step #1: Use the 4 C’s
At the end of the day, a mobile app elevator pitch has the same key
elements as any other elevator pitch—it should make a very distinct
case for why your product should exist and how it will help people.
4. The 4 C’s
Concise
Less than 40 seconds
Basic terminology
No corporate jargon
Clear
Speak articulately to keep
their attention
Casual
Be authentic
Stay relaxed
Remember: this is a
conversation!
Creative
Be distinctive, specific,
and unforgettable
Distinguish yourself
from the pack
5. Step #2: Answer the Big Questions
It’s easy to get caught up in the details. Focusing on the
important questions will help you get your point across
while staying on track
6. Questions to Consider
What exactly does your mobile app do?
How does it do it?
Who would be interested in something like this?
When and where might your target audience use this app?
Why should people use your app instead of others?
7. Pro Tip
Let your listeners know that your mobile app offers a solution to a
challenge they’re facing, and describe the most common use case.
Who needs it and what do they need it for?
8. Step #3: Identify the Goal and How
Your App Accomplishes it
Any successful mobile app has a main goal that drives all
of the functionality—what’s yours?
9. Identify Your Goal and How Your App
Accomplishes It in Two Steps:
1. Identify what users will do once they
open your app
What activity will they engage in while
using your app? This is your app’s goal.
(Ex. “Users will watch their friends’ live video
broadcasts or scroll through a geo-oriented political
news feed.”)
2. Highlight how your app makes it
possible to reach this goal
Important! Don’t list all of your app’s features,
just the elements that get users from points A
to Z.
10. Steps #4:
Explain How Your App is Different
All mobile apps face serious competition right out of the gates. If
you don’t want to get lost in the shuffle, you’ll need to differentiate
yourself.
11. The Key to Differentiation: Your
Unique Selling Proposition
“What separates my idea from the pack?”
This is your unique selling proposition.
Identify one or two key differentiators that you have to
offer, and highlight those during your pitch.
Tip: your unique selling proposition does not need to be a feature of your app–it can even
be the means of which your features deliver what your audience wants!
12. Step #5: Practice and Test
Now that you have all of the pieces, let’s put them together.
13. Pro Practicing Tips:
1. Make sure that your pitch is no longer than 30-40 seconds
2. Hit on each point in a relaxed and natural tone—you’re having a conversation,
after all!
3. Practice with friends and family before trying your pitch in a social setting
4. Get feedback from your listeners by asking open-ended questions—use that
information to help refine your mobile app concept and pitch
14. Remember
Your elevator pitch should never be set in stone;
it should be able to adapt to different situations
and evolve over time!
