2. What is Manufacturing?
• ‘The process of converting raw materials into finish goods.’
• The word “ manufacturing” is derived from the Latin Manu
factus, meaning made by hand.
• Manufacturing refers to a large –scale production of goods
that converts raw materials, parts, and components into
finished merchandise using machines.

• Headquartered in Calcutta.
• ABC Ltd sold over 60 million pairs per annum in India & also exported in
overseas market.
• The company provided employment to 15000 people in it’s manufacturing
& sales operations throughout India.
• The company had a distribution network of over 1,500 retail stores and 27
wholesale depot
• The Company had a net revenues of Rs 7.27 billion and net profit of Rs
304.6 million for the financial year ending December 31, 1999, ABC Ltd was
India's largest manufacturer and marketer of footwear products.
10. Answer
There was party's involvement, the union, the state
government tried to solve the problem by setting up a
tripartite meeting among company officials, the labor
directorate and the union representatives and the workers
feared a closedown as the inquiry proceeded.
11. Our views
• ABC Ltd should not had given the charge to expatriate
manager as it brought the feeling of distrust with the
management
• Secondly, they should begin the downsizing exercise
instantaneously and rapidly. It should be a slow exercise
• Instead of outsourcing 23million pairs per year from other
industries, they should have started manufacturing it in their
own unit.
