A congenital abnormality is one present upon an
infant’s birth. These abnormalities can arise in many
different parts of the body, but those impacting the
structure of the hand can pose a particular challenge
as infants grow and begin to manipulate their
environment. The level of difficulty experienced by a
child depends largely on the severity of the

 The most common kind of congenital hand deformity
is syndactyly, when portions of the hand fail to
properly separate in the womb. For instance, infants
displaying syndactyly may exhibit fused fingers or
even fused finger bones. Other hand abnormalities
include overly large or small digits, the absence of
certain muscles, and the formation of problematic
tissue bands that can restrict blood flow.
To address congenital hand abnormalities, doctors
may suggest surgical care when the child has
reached the appropriate age, usually about 12
months. The surgical method is contingent on the
specific abnormality. For syndactyly, surgeons make
incisions to separate the fused digits. They then apply
skin grafts over the area between the now
independent fingers.
