Sisters, Anne and Lisa Smith, both creatives and dreamers, have come together to create the
Orra Moor Laplander’s Song for The Ice Hotel.
The name, Orra Moor, comes from one of many versions of the Scandinavian folk tune/poem,
“The Laplander’s Song.” In the poem, Orra Moor is the name of the poet’s far away love. He sings
and asks his reindeer to carry him through the snowy forest under the night sky to reunite him with
his Orra Moor.
The reindeer in the poem, both a carrier of a message and a person, is also symbolic. For centu-
ries, reindeer have been a source of food, clothing, and shelter. Also considered a totem of force
and power, reindeer are often believed to act as a bridge or form of kinship between an individual
or group in the physical, natural world and with the dream or spirit world beyond.
We have created a physical interpretation of The Laplander’s Song, where guests will live, sleep,
and experience the folklore associated with reindeer and the yearning felt in The Laplander’s
Song. The vision will be translated through the rare beauty and strength of ice harvested from the
Torne River.
ICE HOTEL #26 - THE ORRA MOOR LAPLANDER’S SONG
ART SUITE
PRESENTED BY ANNE SMITH AND LISA SMITH
“A voice in the starlight – Away! Away!”E.A.S.
In your ICEHOTEL suite, named The Laplander’s Song, a warm and snug sleigh bed is filled with
furs and cozy bright covers. Every night your reindeer is ready to take you under a night sky lit by
1,000 stars along a drifting, snowy glacier path to the dream of your love. You sleep while journey-
ing through the night. You leave the swirling snow and icicle laden pine forests behind. You move
towards hidden mosses and flowers waiting under the snow for the return of the warm pink glow of
the sun after its long absence.
You are “outside” in the night flying over the snow under the moonlight while you sleep, but at the
same time you are “inside” the warmth of your dream.
A fully experiential/ sensual moment of “ The Laplander’s Song” will be felt by the hotel guests to
include smell, sound, touch, sight, and taste. A play on a modern/simple aesthetic will be com-
bined with a romantic/folklore sentiment in the combination of design elements.
ART WORK DESIGN CONCEPT DESCRIPTION
Interior Fixtures: A simple, rustic double sized “sleigh” bed piled with multiple layers of reindeer
furs to be sculpted from clear ice. Decorative flowers and hearts will be sculpted onto the head-
board and sides of the bed..
DESIGN ELEMENTS
Interior Fixtures: A full sized free standing reindeer sculpture “pulling” the sleigh bed, made from
clear ice with pale blue illumination to accent the natural blue of the Torne River ice.
Curved Ceiling: A starry overhead vault of 1,000 pin prick star lights imbedded into a snice ceil-
ing. (Web of LED lights possible)
Room Walls: Starry snice ceiling to down both room walls. One wall to contain a “lit” full moon
carved from clear ice. Base of walls at junction point where floor meets wall to be constructed of
sculpted ice and snice to represent a snowy glacial border. The gap between the boarder and wall
will to contain lighting on a timer to illuminate a pale pink glow upon sunrise.
DESIGN ELEMENTS
Opposing Arched Walls: Wall A, etched geometric, simple pine forest, ice over snice, projected
with “swirling snow” visual projected with the iTunes app SNOWDRIFT. Wall B: etched folkloric
flower detail, ice over snice.
Smell: Each guest receives a handmade sachet tucked under the pillows and furs filled with dried
wild flowers and pine needles, a special sensory keepsake for guests to keep. Each sachet will be
custom made and provided by “The Orra Moor Laplander’s Song Project.”

Sight: The reindeer will be highlighted by a pale blue light. 1,000 pin prick star lights will be im-
bedded into ceiling and wall sides. The “glacier edge” will be backlit changing from a cool evening
glow in the evening to a subtle pink light in the morning. The tree and flower walls will be backlit.
The room will be a magic visual memory.
Touch: Thick reindeer furs provide a soft pillowy bed for each guest, and a quick stroke of the
reindeer’s icy, cool muzzle before going to sleep connects the guest to their dream creature and
sends them on their way.
DESIGN ELEMENTS
Sound: A distant recording of a young woman
singing out to find her love in the winter’s night
plays through a localized sound system upon
request. The song is the poem, “The Lap-
lander’s Song,” It will be sung in Swedish and
English.
Taste: A silver-wrapped custom made
“sweet dreams” chocolate containing
dream herbs sits on each guest’s pil-
low for them to savor before sleep.
Chocolates will be provided by “The
Orra Moor Laplander’s Song Project.”
