Since my appointment as DTC’s president over a year ago, I have had multiple
opportunities to visit and meet with local industry and business leaders in our service
area. In my meetings with these leaders, we discussed the important role DTC plays
in providing workforce-ready training for companies in our community. I shared
with our business and industry leaders my vision to lead and strategically position
DTC as a premier college for workforce development and preparation. In addition
to my vision, I provided significant data and information about the growth of our
workforce development and training programs in the areas of welding, building
construction, industrial maintenance, certified production technician, patient care
technician, and certified nursing assistant.
Recent announcements of high-tech companies locating to South Carolina, and our
service areas in particular, demand that DTC exert a more dynamic role in the education and preparation of
a skilled workforce. The college will accomplish this by upgrading our facilities and equipment, overhauling
programs and curriculums, and developing new pathways and programs to meet the demands and requirements
of modern business. This action will strongly demonstrate to prospective companies Denmark Tech’s capacity
and commitment to provide workforce-ready employees for our service area and beyond.
We salute Governor Nikki Haley for her hard work and resolve in bringing industry to our state. The continuing
state support of the South Carolina Manufacturing Certification program resulted in Denmark Technical College
certifying over 34 students in essential skills for high-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing. The college
will continue to cultivate and build a strong collaboration with our service area economic and workforce
development team that supports the promotion and recruitment of companies like Orchid to our region. We
welcome Orchid Paper Company to Barnwell and look forward to exploring and establishing partnerships for
our mutual benefit.
DTC is excited about the strong partnership and collaboration with other local companies such as Kronotex
USA, Georgia Pacific, Horsehead and Masonite Corporations. Our robust partnership with these companies
through technical discussions, professional observations and evaluations, consultation, and technical training
has resulted in the development and implementation of mechatronics, a multidisciplinary field of engineering
that includes a combination of mechanical, control, and electrical engineering. I am pleased with the outcome
of our Continuing Education and credit programs with our service area high schools. We wish to acknowledge
our district superintendents and their high school principals for their firm support of dual enrollment, Project
Lead the Way, and our 2nd annual summer high school initiative, where students can get a head start on
receiving college credit while still in high school, using the lottery tuition assistance program.
Our mission is workforce development and preparation, and transfer. Toward this end, we are proud to
announce that this Spring, DTC graduated 234 students who pursued some 28 program areas, culminating in
the awarding of certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees. With this edition, we congratulate our graduates.
Congratulations!

Great things continue to happen at
DTC! On Friday, May 1, 2015 at 6:00
p.m., Denmark Technical College held
its 68th commencement convocation
at the William L. McDuffie Student
Services Center.
In opening the 2015 Commencement,
President Leonard A. McIntyre
welcomed all parents, relatives, and
friends of the graduates to witness the
conferring of the Certificates, Diplomas, and Degrees.
A standing-room only gymnasium filled with proud
parents, community leaders, faculty, staff, and well-
wishers witnessed a solemn processional ceremony
and the conferring of degrees, diplomas, and technical
certificates on more than 230 students.
Duringhisaddresstothegraduates,RepresentativeJustin
T. Bamberg of South Carolina District 90 congratulated
the graduates on their educational accomplishments
and encouraged them to exude perseverance in their
pursuit of exemplary citizenry. He advised the audience
to embrace perseverance, resiliency, determination, and
accountability in their everyday life. Reflecting on his
personal experience, Representative Bamberg told the
graduates to pursue their dreams no matter how hard or
long the journey, “I can because I say so, I will because
I expect to,” quipped Representative Bamberg.
Throughout his speech, Representative Bamberg cajoled
the graduates to believe in themselves and capitalize on
the opportunities that will come their way as a result
of their DTC education and training. He reminded the
graduating class that they have worked very hard to earn
the right to be called graduates. He acknowledged the
parents and family members who supported the graduate
everystepofthewaytoarriveatthisauspiciousoccasion.
He closed his address by challenging the graduates to
“take advantage of each opportunity during the life of
the opportunity, do you want to be successful, or do you
expect to be successful?”
Following the graduation message, Dr. McIntyre
presented Representative Bamberg with a plaque.
President McIntyre also presented special awards to two
alumni for outstanding service to Denmark Technical
College. Mr. Willie Caldwell of Denmark, SC received
the Presidential Service Award and Mr. Marion Blakely
Jr. of Laurens, SC received the 2015 Distinguished
Alumni Award.
Additionally, DTC wishes to acknowledge the
outstanding support and leadership provided by our
legislative delegation. As a result of their committment
and dedication to the mission of the college, moments
like commencement provide cherished memories for
many of their constituents. We are grateful for their
support.
The DTC choir provided the music and Reverend Dr.
Herman Wallace, pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist
church, Blackville, SC,

The first recruitment fair
for the Louis Stokes South
Carolina Alliance for Minority
Participation (LS-SCAMP),
in Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics
Majors (STEM) was held on the
campus of DTC on April 16th,
2015. This project is dedicated
primarily to the students in the
STEM fields at DTC and many students, faculty and
staff attended.
Recruiters from 4-year institutions descended on the
DTC campus to recruit and enroll students into their
respective programs. The turnout was great with
representatives from Benedict College, College of
Charleston, Morris College, Voorhees College, Allen
University, Claflin University, Clemson University,
South Carolina State University, and the University of
South Carolina in attendance. Students were thrilled
that they were able to ask questions, fill out applications,
and collect information all in one convenient location.
DTC Enrollment Services and Academics also took
the opportunity to network
with the institutions and
discuss pathways for our
student graduates. More than
50 students participated in the
transfer activities.
The LS-SCAMP grant was
developed to remove the
barriers that prevent full participation in STEM fields
by minority individuals. Dr. Judith Salley, Executive
Director of LS-SCAMP at SCSU, stated, “We want to
increase our transfer rates above and beyond previous
years and the success of our first Transfer Day at
Denmark Technical College will positively impact our
goal.” Mrs. Tarshua Teresa Mack, Principal Investigator
(PI) of LS-SCAMP at DTC, was the coordinator of
the recruitment fair and did an outstanding job with
the planning and
implementation of
this very successful
event.

The excitement was
overwhelming as almost
500 children from local day
care facilities, schools and
Head Start centers anxiously
scrambled off their buses
recently to attend the annual
DTC Youth Fun Day. The week of April 12-18 had been
designated “Week of the Young Child” by NAEYC
(National Association for the Education of Young
Children) as an opportunity for all child care workers,
families and students to be recognized for all their hard
work.
The event was sponsored by the Early
Care and Education division at DTC.
Public Service Dean Biju Kabisatpathy,
Early Childhood instructor Mrs.
Rosaland Kenner, and the ECE/ECD
students spent many long hours preparing
for the event and it was obvious by the
appreciative looks on the children’s faces that they
enjoyed every minute. The activities ranged from
active to sedate as children chose
between exuberantly jumping in
the bouncy house or sitting quietly
on a rug listening to stories. New
this year was a cotton candy
machine working overtime to spin
its delicate confectionary web.
As the children left, they were
given a treat bag with assorted
goodies and as they climbed back
on the bus at the end of Fun Day,
they smiled, much
more subdued than
when they arrived,
proudly displaying their newly painted
butterflies, flowers and hearts adorning
their little faces.

DTC Student Going “Down Under” After Graduation
Student Credits Instructors for International Opportunity
Mr. Fields performing field service under the
watchful eye of DTC instructor Mr. Woodward.
Denmark Technical College students are expanding their
horizons when it comes to employment opportunities.
Recent students in the welding, plumbing, and building
and construction programs have found high paying
jobs in exotic places such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and
Australia.
Johnny Fields, a May 2015 graduate, is one such student.
Mr. Fields started learning his vocational skills doing
summer jobs for his father who was a plumber. He began
his professional career working for local and general
contractors.
In the early 90’s, Mr. Fields,
enlistedintheUnitedStatesArmy
as a corporal. He spent 10 years
in the army and an additional 14
years in law enforcement before
retiring in 2010. Not content
to sit around after retirement,
Mr. Fields decided to return
to college to fulfill his lifelong
dream of becoming a licensed
plumber. As such, he enrolled
in the building and construction
certificate program at DTC.
When asked why he picked
DTC for his classes, Fields
enthusiastically stated, “I checked into other schools. I
did my homework, but I kept coming back to DTC. It
was close to home, extremely affordable, and offered the
Students Meet Dr. Ben Carson at NADE Conference
Early on a brisk morning in February, a mixture of
students and advisors hopped on a bus and drove to
Greenville, SC to attend the National Association
for Developmental Education (NADE) Conference.
While there, the students from the SGA, Esquire Club,
Transitional Studies, and Human Services had the
opportunity to meet with keynote speaker, Dr. Ben
Carson, have lunch, and attend the career fair.

a single mother and older brother in poverty stricken
Detroit, rising from academic failure to become a world
renowned nuerosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He
challenged the audience to “find the inner strength to
pursue one’s educational goals and how professionals
can motivate students to become successful.”

Residential Plumbing exam, a requirement for licensing.
As a student, I worked very closely with my instructors
and academic advisor. I found my instructors to be very
supportive and I was so impressed with their enormous
wealth of knowledge and real world experience, I knew
I had made the right choice.”
Mr. Fields will be leaving shortly for Moomba, Australia
for his new and exciting job. While there, he will be
working at an off-shore oil rig as well as a natural gas
plant. This international employment
opportunity will earn Mr. Fields a six
figure salary, annual leave, and the
ability to travel the world.
President Leonard A. McIntyre, is
ecstaticaboutMr.Fields’sinternational
employment opportunity. “Mr. Fields
is a prime example of the many
opportunities that an education from
DTC can provide. In this age of
globalization and internationalization,
it is incumbent on us as higher
education institutions to prepare our
graduates for jobs in this knowledge-
based workforce both in the United
States and abroad.”
DTC wishes Mr. Fields much success in his current and
future endeavors.

February was a fabulous month at Denmark Technical
College. In addition to homecoming festivities and
the spectacular Scholarship Gala, the DTC family and
community also hosted an inaugural Black History
Monthprogram.Themanyactivitiesthatwereorganized
included: formal dining etiquette for students, health
panel discussion, health fair, and presentations by two
civil rights icons of our time. The local community
was invited to join us in our month long celebration
of African American history and
many enthusiastically attended and
supported the activities.
The Black History Month (BHM)
program festivities began with
student-focused events. First,
students and faculty were invited
to learn and participate in formal
dining etiquette. The event was a
great success with nearly 70 students
in attendance.
Second, a well-attended community health fair took
place in the William L. McDuffie Student Services
Center on February 11, 2015. During the health fair,
health professionals performed free blood pressure,
cholesterol, and diabetes checks on participants.
Additionally, the participants were advised on how to
maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Black History Month
Committee also hosted a health panel discussion
consisting of a doctor, a nurse, and a pharmacist. The
panelist addressed several topics including: prevalent
diseases among African Americans (high blood
pressure and diabetes), stress and depression, sexually
transmitted diseases, and the importance of medical
check-ups and vaccinations. The panelists presented a
very compelling presentation, encouraging participants
to ask questions and seek help if needed.
The BHM program culminated with powerful
presentations by two civil rights champions on
February 23, 2015 on the campus of DTC. The first
speaker was Mrs. Brendolyn Boseman, the Executive
Director of The Imani Group, Inc., a community
based non-profit organization based in Aiken, SC. In
her introspective presentation, Reverend Boseman
addressed the audience on the importance of speaking
for the voiceless and standing for the truth.
The main presentation was delivered to a standing-
room-only audience in the auditorium by our
distinguished guest speaker for the hour, the Honorable
Congressman James E. Clyburn of South Carolina.
In his presentation, Congressman Clyburn shared his
personal journey from his birthplace in Sumter, SC to
become the third highest ranking democrat in the U. S.
House of Representatives. In speaking to the audience,
he expressed the importance of education and the need
for all citizens to stand up and fight for values and
principles that make America great. He encouraged the
audience to find their niche, be tenacious, and above all,
be respectful of one another. The program concluded
with a reception during which time the congressman
graciouslyautographedhisbook“BlessedExperiences”
and posed for pictures with students and members of
the community who came to hear him speak.
“The Black History Month program facilitated by Mrs. Jenkins was
truly outstanding. Throughout the month of February, we addressed
and presented educational information on current, social, and health
care issues important to the community. A robust attendance from our
community to the BHM events and activities demonstrate the vital role
DTC continues to play in our service area. This program and others are
critical in fulfilling the vision of President McIntyre and the mission of
the college.”
Dr. Lamin E. Drammeh, Executive Director and Special Assistant to the President
Denmark Technical College (DTC) in partnership with the DTC Foundation hosted a successful Scholarship
Gala on Thursday, February 5th, 2015. The theme of the Scholarship Gala was “Get on Up” for DTC featuring
a James Brown Exhibit. The purpose of the Scholarship Gala was to raise funds to support low-income students
to matriculate through a certificate, diploma, or degree program here at DTC. The scholarship will increase
opportunities for first generation students to achieve a quality education and become productive members of
society.
The night was filled with elegance, live entertainment, dinner, and dancing. The décor of the Gala was extravagant,
thanks to the hard work of DTC volunteers. The event-filled evening included a Wine and Cheese Reception, a
Silent Auction, and viewing of the James Brown Exhibit featuring his memorabilia. IP Stanback Museum and
Planetarium at SC State University provided the James Brown memorabilia that was displayed.
Mrs. Von Gaskin, Meteorologist at WIS-TV, was the Mistress of Ceremony. The DTC Choir showed up and
showed out with astonishing performances followed by live entertainment provided by “The Vibrations.”
Mrs. Teresa Mack, Chair of the Scholarship Gala Committee, acknowledged the tremendous commitment and
efforts it took to successfully organize the Scholarship Gala. “The Gala would not have been a success without
the support and dedication of our Area Commission, Executive Council, Gala Committee members, and our
wonderful Faculty and Staff,” said Mrs. Mack.
President McIntyre upon reflection on the Gala proudly stated, “We are deeply grateful to our stakeholders for all
their generosity shown in support of the Scholarship Gala. This means that many deserving students will be able
to depend on the proceeds to continue their education here at DTC.”
The college will continue to engage all stakeholders in our yearlong strategic campaign to raise funds to support
the educational growth and professional development of our students. Alumni, friends and supporters of DTC
who would like to make a contribution to the Scholarship fund, please visit: www.denmarktech.edu/gala.

DTC Student Has An Unusual Bucket List Request
Marcia A. Jones was hoping to have a very
important face in the crowd cheering for her
on graduation day. When Ms. Jones received
her invitations to hand out for graduation
she thought bigger than relatives, friends, or
coworkers to invite to the occasion, inviting
President Obama. Asked why she picked
him, she quickly replied, “It is number 25 on
my bucket list to stay overnight in the White
House so instead of asking that, I asked for
him to attend my graduation.” A bucket list
is a list made popular by the movie “Bucket
List” where a person lists all of the things they
would like to accomplish in their life time.
Every day she would anxiously go to the mail
box, her heart racing, always hopeful that
she would find a reply. Finally, it happened.
Opening the mail box, she saw it! A reply
from the White House!
Ms. Jones graduated with honors this May to
cheers from her family and friends. The DTC
family is so proud of her efforts and knowledge
of the history of the college. Congratulations
and good luck on achieving the rest of your
bucket list!

President Barack Obama
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Obama,
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read this letter and enclosed
invitation to my college graduation in May. I am a 63 years old female and decided to go back to
college to get a degree. I was a teen Mom and the care of my children was more important to me.
In the State of SC, if you are 60 years and older and meet the requirements your tuition is
waived. I chose and decide to drive a 100 miles a day to Denmark Technical College, an HBCU
and here is a little history of the campus:
The General Assembly of the State of South Carolina authorized the establishment of Denmark
Technical College in 1947 and the College began operation on March 1, 1948, as the Denmark
Branch of the South Carolina Trade School System. At its inception, the institution functioned
under the authority of the South Carolina Department of Education and was mandated to educate
black citizens in various trades.
In 1969, the control of Denmark Area Trade School (Denmark Technical College) was
transferred to the South Carolina Advisory Committee for Technical Training which acted under
the supervision of the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education. During the same
year, the name of the College was changed to Denmark Technical Education Center.
In 1979, the institution was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and
assumed its present designation as Denmark Technical College and its accreditation was
extended again in 2014.
I will complete the required 2 years for my degree in Human Services on May 01, 2015. I
finished the 2014 year with a 3.5 GPA and hope to graduate with honors this year (not bad for a
63 year old who has been out of school since 1968. I received a GED in 1975). My plan is to
transfer to a 4 year college to obtain my Bachelor of Social Work Degree (BSW).
Again, thank you Mr. President for taking the time out to read this letter. I know you have
matters of the State to attend to and are unable to attend. But just the thought of you reading this
letter will be enough to make my graduation day that much more rewarding.
And, yes, I know you are the best President (and you are way too COOL) I have seen in that
office and former President Clinton is my second choice.
I thank the only one true and living God for protecting you and your lovely family.
And God Bless the United States of America.
Yours respectfully,
Marcia Ann (Brazzell) Jones

  • 2. Page 2 Since my appointment as DTC’s president over a year ago, I have had multiple opportunities to visit and meet with local industry and business leaders in our service area. In my meetings with these leaders, we discussed the important role DTC plays in providing workforce-ready training for companies in our community. I shared with our business and industry leaders my vision to lead and strategically position DTC as a premier college for workforce development and preparation. In addition to my vision, I provided significant data and information about the growth of our workforce development and training programs in the areas of welding, building construction, industrial maintenance, certified production technician, patient care technician, and certified nursing assistant. Recent announcements of high-tech companies locating to South Carolina, and our service areas in particular, demand that DTC exert a more dynamic role in the education and preparation of a skilled workforce. The college will accomplish this by upgrading our facilities and equipment, overhauling programs and curriculums, and developing new pathways and programs to meet the demands and requirements of modern business. This action will strongly demonstrate to prospective companies Denmark Tech’s capacity and commitment to provide workforce-ready employees for our service area and beyond. We salute Governor Nikki Haley for her hard work and resolve in bringing industry to our state. The continuing state support of the South Carolina Manufacturing Certification program resulted in Denmark Technical College certifying over 34 students in essential skills for high-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing. The college will continue to cultivate and build a strong collaboration with our service area economic and workforce development team that supports the promotion and recruitment of companies like Orchid to our region. We welcome Orchid Paper Company to Barnwell and look forward to exploring and establishing partnerships for our mutual benefit. DTC is excited about the strong partnership and collaboration with other local companies such as Kronotex USA, Georgia Pacific, Horsehead and Masonite Corporations. Our robust partnership with these companies through technical discussions, professional observations and evaluations, consultation, and technical training has resulted in the development and implementation of mechatronics, a multidisciplinary field of engineering that includes a combination of mechanical, control, and electrical engineering. I am pleased with the outcome of our Continuing Education and credit programs with our service area high schools. We wish to acknowledge our district superintendents and their high school principals for their firm support of dual enrollment, Project Lead the Way, and our 2nd annual summer high school initiative, where students can get a head start on receiving college credit while still in high school, using the lottery tuition assistance program. Our mission is workforce development and preparation, and transfer. Toward this end, we are proud to announce that this Spring, DTC graduated 234 students who pursued some 28 program areas, culminating in the awarding of certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees. With this edition, we congratulate our graduates. Congratulations! DTC CONTINUES TO FULFILL ITS MISSION A Message from the President Cordially, Dr. Leonard A. He closed his address by challenging the graduates to “take advantage of each opportunity during the life of the opportunity, do you want to be successful, or do you expect to be successful?” Following the graduation message, Dr. McIntyre presented Representative Bamberg with a plaque. President McIntyre also presented special awards to two alumni for outstanding service to Denmark Technical College. Mr. Willie Caldwell of Denmark, SC received the Presidential Service Award and Mr. Marion Blakely Jr. of Laurens, SC received the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award. Additionally, DTC wishes to acknowledge the outstanding support and leadership provided by our legislative delegation. As a result of their committment and dedication to the mission of the college, moments like commencement provide cherished memories for many of their constituents. We are grateful for their support. The DTC choir provided the music and Reverend Dr. Herman Wallace, pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist church, Blackville, SC, provided the Invocation. • 5. Page 5 The first recruitment fair for the Louis Stokes South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-SCAMP), in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Majors (STEM) was held on the campus of DTC on April 16th, 2015. This project is dedicated primarily to the students in the STEM fields at DTC and many students, faculty and staff attended. Recruiters from 4-year institutions descended on the DTC campus to recruit and enroll students into their respective programs. The turnout was great with representatives from Benedict College, College of Charleston, Morris College, Voorhees College, Allen University, Claflin University, Clemson University, South Carolina State University, and the University of South Carolina in attendance. Students were thrilled that they were able to ask questions, fill out applications, and collect information all in one convenient location. DTC Enrollment Services and Academics also took the opportunity to network with the institutions and discuss pathways for our student graduates. More than 50 students participated in the transfer activities. The LS-SCAMP grant was developed to remove the barriers that prevent full participation in STEM fields by minority individuals. Dr. Judith Salley, Executive Director of LS-SCAMP at SCSU, stated, “We want to increase our transfer rates above and beyond previous years and the success of our first Transfer Day at Denmark Technical College will positively impact our goal.” Mrs. Tarshua Teresa Mack, Principal Investigator (PI) of LS-SCAMP at DTC, was the coordinator of the recruitment fair and did an outstanding job with the planning and implementation of this very successful event. Page 5 The excitement was overwhelming as almost 500 children from local day care facilities, schools and Head Start centers anxiously scrambled off their buses recently to attend the annual DTC Youth Fun Day. The week of April 12-18 had been designated “Week of the Young Child” by NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) as an opportunity for all child care workers, families and students to be recognized for all their hard work. The event was sponsored by the Early Care and Education division at DTC. Public Service Dean Biju Kabisatpathy, Early Childhood instructor Mrs. Rosaland Kenner, and the ECE/ECD students spent many long hours preparing for the event and it was obvious by the appreciative looks on the children’s faces that they enjoyed every minute. The activities ranged from active to sedate as children chose between exuberantly jumping in the bouncy house or sitting quietly on a rug listening to stories. New this year was a cotton candy machine working overtime to spin its delicate confectionary web. As the children left, they were given a treat bag with assorted goodies and as they climbed back on the bus at the end of Fun Day, they smiled, much more subdued than when they arrived, proudly displaying their newly painted butterflies, flowers and hearts adorning their little faces. Denmark Technical College students are expanding their horizons when it comes to employment opportunities. Recent students in the welding, plumbing, and building and construction programs have found high paying jobs in exotic places such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Australia. Johnny Fields, a May 2015 graduate, is one such student. Mr. Fields started learning his vocational skills doing summer jobs for his father who was a plumber. He began his professional career working for local and general contractors. In the early 90’s, Mr. Fields, enlistedintheUnitedStatesArmy as a corporal. He spent 10 years in the army and an additional 14 years in law enforcement before retiring in 2010. Not content to sit around after retirement, Mr. Fields decided to return to college to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a licensed plumber. As such, he enrolled in the building and construction certificate program at DTC. When asked why he picked DTC for his classes, Fields enthusiastically stated, “I checked into other schools. I did my homework, but I kept coming back to DTC. It was close to home, extremely affordable, and offered the Students Meet Dr. Ben Carson at NADE Conference Early on a brisk morning in February, a mixture of students and advisors hopped on a bus and drove to Greenville, SC to attend the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) Conference. While there, he will be working at an off-shore oil rig as well as a natural gas plant. This international employment opportunity will earn Mr. Fields a six figure salary, annual leave, and the ability to travel the world. President Leonard A. McIntyre, is ecstaticaboutMr.Fields’sinternational employment opportunity. “Mr. Fields is a prime example of the many opportunities that an education from DTC can provide. In this age of globalization and internationalization, it is incumbent on us as higher education institutions to prepare our graduates for jobs in this knowledge- based workforce both in the United States and abroad.” DTC wishes Mr. Fields much success in his current and future endeavors. In addition to homecoming festivities and the spectacular Scholarship Gala, the DTC family and community also hosted an inaugural Black History Monthprogram.Themanyactivitiesthatwereorganized included: formal dining etiquette for students, health panel discussion, health fair, and presentations by two civil rights icons of our time. The local community was invited to join us in our month long celebration of African American history and many enthusiastically attended and supported the activities. The Black History Month (BHM) program festivities began with student-focused events. First, students and faculty were invited to learn and participate in formal dining etiquette. The event was a great success with nearly 70 students in attendance. Second, a well-attended community health fair took place in the William L. McDuffie Student Services Center on February 11, 2015. During the health fair, health professionals performed free blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes checks on participants. Additionally, the participants were advised on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Black History Month Committee also hosted a health panel discussion consisting of a doctor, a nurse, and a pharmacist. The panelist addressed several topics including: prevalent diseases among African Americans (high blood pressure and diabetes), stress and depression, sexually transmitted diseases, and the importance of medical check-ups and vaccinations. The panelists presented a very compelling presentation, encouraging participants to ask questions and seek help if needed. The BHM program culminated with powerful presentations by two civil rights champions on February 23, 2015 on the campus of DTC. The first speaker was Mrs. Brendolyn Boseman, the Executive Director of The Imani Group, Inc., a community based non-profit organization based in Aiken, SC. In her introspective presentation, Reverend Boseman addressed the audience on the importance of speaking for the voiceless and standing for the truth. The main presentation was delivered to a standing- room-only audience in the auditorium by our distinguished guest speaker for the hour, the Honorable Congressman James E. Clyburn of South Carolina. In his presentation, Congressman Clyburn shared his personal journey from his birthplace in Sumter, SC to become the third highest ranking democrat in the U. S. House of Representatives. In speaking to the audience, he expressed the importance of education and the need for all citizens to stand up and fight for values and principles that make America great. He encouraged the audience to find their niche, be tenacious, and above all, be respectful of one another. The program concluded with a reception during which time the congressman graciouslyautographedhisbook“BlessedExperiences” and posed for pictures with students and members of the community who came to hear him speak. “The Black History Month program facilitated by Mrs. Jenkins was truly outstanding. Throughout the month of February, we addressed and presented educational information on current, social, and health care issues important to the community. A robust attendance from our community to the BHM events and activities demonstrate the vital role DTC continues to play in our service area. This program and others are critical in fulfilling the vision of President McIntyre and the mission of the college.” Dr. Lamin E. Drammeh, Executive Director and Special Assistant to the President
  • 8. Denmark Technical College (DTC) in partnership with the DTC Foundation hosted a successful Scholarship Gala on Thursday, February 5th, 2015. The theme of the Scholarship Gala was “Get on Up” for DTC featuring a James Brown Exhibit. The purpose of the Scholarship Gala was to raise funds to support low-income students to matriculate through a certificate, diploma, or degree program here at DTC. The scholarship will increase opportunities for first generation students to achieve a quality education and become productive members of society. The night was filled with elegance, live entertainment, dinner, and dancing. The décor of the Gala was extravagant, thanks to the hard work of DTC volunteers. The event-filled evening included a Wine and Cheese Reception, a Silent Auction, and viewing of the James Brown Exhibit featuring his memorabilia. IP Stanback Museum and Planetarium at SC State University provided the James Brown memorabilia that was displayed. Mrs. Von Gaskin, Meteorologist at WIS-TV, was the Mistress of Ceremony. The DTC Choir showed up and showed out with astonishing performances followed by live entertainment provided by “The Vibrations.” Mrs. Teresa Mack, Chair of the Scholarship Gala Committee, acknowledged the tremendous commitment and efforts it took to successfully organize the Scholarship Gala. “The Gala would not have been a success without the support and dedication of our Area Commission, Executive Council, Gala Committee members, and our wonderful Faculty and Staff,” said Mrs. Mack. President McIntyre upon reflection on the Gala proudly stated, “We are deeply grateful to our stakeholders for all their generosity shown in support of the Scholarship Gala. This means that many deserving students will be able to depend on the proceeds to continue their education here at DTC.” The college will continue to engage all stakeholders in our yearlong strategic campaign to raise funds to support the educational growth and professional development of our students. • 11. Page 11 DTC Student Has An Unusual Bucket List Request Marcia A. Jones was hoping to have a very important face in the crowd cheering for her on graduation day. When Ms. Jones received her invitations to hand out for graduation she thought bigger than relatives, friends, or coworkers to invite to the occasion, inviting President Obama. Asked why she picked him, she quickly replied, “It is number 25 on my bucket list to stay overnight in the White House so instead of asking that, I asked for him to attend my graduation.” A bucket list is a list made popular by the movie “Bucket List” where a person lists all of the things they would like to accomplish in their life time. Every day she would anxiously go to the mail box, her heart racing, always hopeful that she would find a reply. Finally, it happened. Opening the mail box, she saw it! A reply from the White House! Ms. Jones graduated with honors this May to cheers from her family and friends. The DTC family is so proud of her efforts and knowledge of the history of the college. Congratulations and good luck on achieving the rest of your bucket list! Pictured left to right, Area Commissioner Chairman DeWayne Ennis, President Leonard A. McIntyre, and Marcia Ann Jones. President Barack Obama 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, DC 20500 Dear President Obama, Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read this letter and enclosed invitation to my college graduation in May. I am a 63 years old female and decided to go back to college to get a degree. I was a teen Mom and the care of my children was more important to me. In the State of SC, if you are 60 years and older and meet the requirements your tuition is waived. I chose and decide to drive a 100 miles a day to Denmark Technical College, an HBCU and here is a little history of the campus: The General Assembly of the State of South Carolina authorized the establishment of Denmark Technical College in 1947 and the College began operation on March 1, 1948, as the Denmark Branch of the South Carolina Trade School System. At its inception, the institution functioned under the authority of the South Carolina Department of Education and was mandated to educate black citizens in various trades. In 1969, the control of Denmark Area Trade School (Denmark Technical College) was transferred to the South Carolina Advisory Committee for Technical Training which acted under the supervision of the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education. During the same year, the name of the College was changed to Denmark Technical Education Center. In 1979, the institution was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and assumed its present designation as Denmark Technical College and its accreditation was extended again in 2014. I will complete the required 2 years for my degree in Human Services on May 01, 2015. I finished the 2014 year with a 3.5 GPA and hope to graduate with honors this year (not bad for a 63 year old who has been out of school since 1968. I received a GED in 1975). My plan is to transfer to a 4 year college to obtain my Bachelor of Social Work Degree (BSW). Again, thank you Mr. President for taking the time out to read this letter. I know you have matters of the State to attend to and are unable to attend. But just the thought of you reading this letter will be enough to make my graduation day that much more rewarding. And, yes, I know you are the best President (and you are way too COOL) I have seen in that office and former President Clinton is my second choice. I thank the only one true and living God for protecting you and your lovely family. And God Bless the United States of America. Yours respectfully, Marcia Ann (Brazzell) Jones Marcia Jones
