Ancient Egyptians believed several organs were essential for the afterlife including the heart, intestines, liver, lungs and stomach. They removed and preserved these organs in Canopic jars, which were associated with the four sons of Horus - Imsety, Duamutef, Hapy, and Qebehsenuef. The brain was generally not preserved or removed.
