5. Purpose of the Project
¤ To assess pre and post-operative body satisfaction in
transgender FTM patients seeking bilateral mastectomies
¤ Determine demographic characteristics and
complication rates of FTM patients who have sought the
bilateral mastectomy
¤ To determine the prevalence of discrimination in medical
settings experienced by transgender identified patients
6. Prospective Study: Surveys
¤ FTM patients at the University of Utah are given the option of
enrolling in the pre-operative study up to 2 weeks before
their confirmed surgical date. A post-operative survey is
issued 6 months from when the pre-op survey was
completed.
¤ Pre-operative survey includes the following validated survey
tools:
¤ Demographics- Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
¤ Chest satisfaction- Breast-Q Mastectomy module
¤ Overall body image- Body Uneasiness Test- A
¤ Discrimination in Medical Settings Questionnaire
¤ Post-operative survey includes:
¤ Breast-Q module
¤ Body Uneasiness Test- A
7. Retrospective Study: Surveys
¤ Assessment of transgender (FTM and MTF) chest
satisfaction and body image at a single point in time. This
section of the study will be conducted as a national,
anonymous survey of transgender patients.
¤ Each survey will branch into its respective category,
based on the characteristics of the individual
participating; i.e. FTM or MTF and pre-operative or post-
operative
¤ The FTM surveys will utilize the same tools listed as the
prospective study.
¤ The MTF surveys will be adjusted to contain a Breast-Q
augmentation module, but all other tools will remain the
same.
8. Retrospective Study: Chart Review
¤ Review of FTM mastectomies performed by a single
surgeon at the University of Utah over a 5 year period.
¤ The study will assess the following key aspects:
¤ Demographics
¤ Risk factors
¤ Techniques
¤ Complications
¤ Outcomes
9. Study to Date: Prospective Survey
¤ 20 completed pre-operative surveys in a 4 month time
span
¤ 6 month post-operative surveys are automatically e-
mailed to survey participants via REDcap software
system. Pre and post-operative surveys are automatically
linked within the software.
¤ Our goal is to enroll 100 participants in the study within
the next 12 months
¤ Retrospective surveys and chart reviews are still in
production
