Transgender Terminology
¤  Gender Identity: Personal experience of one’s gender
¤  Transgender: An individual whose gender identity or
expression differs from that which is typically associated
with their biological sex
¤  FTM: female-to-male
¤  MTF: male-to-female
¤  Transsexual: An individual who undergoes medical and/
or surgical procedure to change their sex. (clinical
terminology)
Background: Who is the Transgender
community?
¤  Transgender community is part of the larger LGBT
community
¤  Differentiating between sexual orientation (LGB) and gender
identity (T)
¤  As reported by the Williams Institute (2011)
¤  3.4% Lesbian or bisexual women
¤  3.6% Gay or bisexual men
¤  0.3% (700,000) Transgender
Transgender Healthcare Statistics
¤  National Transgender Discrimination Report (2010):
¤  19% reported refusal of care due to transgender or
gender non-conforming identity.
¤  28% were subject to harassment in medical settings
¤  Majority of participants have accessed some form of
transition related medical care
¤  FTM Patient Satisfaction: Reduction Mammaplasty (2007)
¤  83% of patients concluded that surgery would have
positive impact on their life
¤  100% satisfaction with overall result of surgery
Purpose of the Project
¤  To assess pre and post-operative body satisfaction in
transgender FTM patients seeking bilateral mastectomies
¤  Determine demographic characteristics and
complication rates of FTM patients who have sought the
bilateral mastectomy
¤  To determine the prevalence of discrimination in medical
settings experienced by transgender identified patients
Prospective Study: Surveys
¤  FTM patients at the University of Utah are given the option of
enrolling in the pre-operative study up to 2 weeks before
their confirmed surgical date. A post-operative survey is
issued 6 months from when the pre-op survey was
completed.
¤  Pre-operative survey includes the following validated survey
tools:
¤  Demographics- Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
¤  Chest satisfaction- Breast-Q Mastectomy module
¤  Overall body image- Body Uneasiness Test- A
¤  Discrimination in Medical Settings Questionnaire
¤  Post-operative survey includes:
¤  Breast-Q module
¤  Body Uneasiness Test- A
Retrospective Study: Surveys
¤  Assessment of transgender (FTM and MTF) chest
satisfaction and body image at a single point in time. This
section of the study will be conducted as a national,
anonymous survey of transgender patients.
¤  Each survey will branch into its respective category,
based on the characteristics of the individual
participating; i.e. FTM or MTF and pre-operative or post-
operative
¤  The FTM surveys will utilize the same tools listed as the
prospective study.
¤  The MTF surveys will be adjusted to contain a Breast-Q
augmentation module, but all other tools will remain the
same.
Retrospective Study: Chart Review
¤  Review of FTM mastectomies performed by a single
surgeon at the University of Utah over a 5 year period.
¤  The study will assess the following key aspects:
¤  Demographics
¤  Risk factors
¤  Techniques
¤  Complications
¤  Outcomes
Study to Date: Prospective Survey
¤  20 completed pre-operative surveys in a 4 month time
span
¤  6 month post-operative surveys are automatically e-
mailed to survey participants via REDcap software
system. Pre and post-operative surveys are automatically
linked within the software.
¤  Our goal is to enroll 100 participants in the study within
the next 12 months
¤  Retrospective surveys and chart reviews are still in
production
