1. The Cost is Correct
Welcome to The Cost is Correct, the game show legally distinct from but spiritually
inspired by The Price is Right!
On Friday, Feb 26, Peter Hansen, Page RD and licensed carrier of a killer smile, hosted
the newest WAC student event. Peter lead students, selected by raffle, through a plethora of
bidding games based on America’s materialist culture. Participants first competed to guess as
close to the cost of an item without going over the retail price. Each round’s winner continued on
that round’s unique challenge. These creative mini-games included everything from an Indian
Jones and the Last Crusade esc. price walk to nailing a hole-in-one. Beat the challenge and
receive prizes that would make Scrooge giddy with greedy glee.
WAC offered over $3,000 worth of prices for the big event. Fan favorites included a
massage package for two, Lulu LemonTM
tights, and enough packages of Fruit by the FootTM
to
put a sever-year-old in a glycemic coma. Two extra special participants, selected from the
winners of each round, competed in the finale for a Brand name super package or trip package to
Disney Land, lightsabers and chicken legs included. Noah DeLaurie, the champion of the night,
came away with enough outdoor gear to mount your average Everest climb or trip up the hill to
Page. When asked about his victory, Noah told the Horizon, he “wasn’t expecting it…but really
need something awesome like this” to raise his spirits after a long week.
Spirits were certainly high at the event, thanks in part to consistently peppy color
commentary on the consumer goods by Ryan Anderson. Thanks to his witty word play and sky-
wide smile, this writer had never been so excited about a three pack of laundry detergent since he
realized he’d run of clean clothes on a Monday night.
The energy of the evening was not lost on Peter Hansen, who remarked “the WAC
continues to up its game under Katie Wright’s leadership” and thanked the WAC team for all
their work “putting together prices, items, slides, bidding games, props, sound…” under Erik
Handsen’s lead.
Although the buzzers for the game could sound less like celebration and more like a
verbal assault on the ear drum, the production level and quality for the event remained high
throughout. Each game had new and diverse items to bid on and its own signs, props, and
2. gimmicks. Opening the event with music selections that got sections of the crowd boogying to
the beat, the WAC team kept the mood high with a selection of upbeat tunes peppy enough to
make you think you’d died and gone to Disneyland.
Standout moments of the night include Eddie Sholze, Vice Dean of Student Life, surprise
defeat by the students she serves tireless, and Ryan Anderson’s reminder that “you can’t solve
the tension in the Middle East but you can solve the tension in your lower back.”
As Victoria Morookian, Junior, said “WAC is doing great this year. Best I’ve seen them
yet.” Even, if you didn’t walk away with $150 in amazon gift cards, as one student did, there was
a lot to celebrate in this game of currency contemplation.
