01Dates of the Olympic Games
Olympic Games: 20thJuly – 3rdAugust
Paralympic Games: 17thAugust – 31stAugust
The climate is great since the average temperatures
are around 15° degrees and the rains are idle than any
other time of the year. This will allow the athletes to
compete in the best climatic conditions because it will
not be neither too hot nor too cold.
Schools will be in the summer break and so there will
be no traffic due to school schedules and public
transport will be less crowded. In addition, a large
number of high school and university students will be
able to work together as volunteers in the organization
of the games.
Each summer, San Francisco attracts itself a lot of
tourist who come to visit the town and its most known
monument such as the world famous Golden Gate
bridge, the mysterious Alcatraz, the old fashioned
Cable Cars, The Fisherman’s Warf with its sealion
basking in the sun, the Painted Ladies.
San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 5
I – Motivation, concept and legacy
02Motivation, Legacy
Every four years, the world comes together to watch
the world’s greatest athletes compete in a two and a
half week long event. With national pride booming
during the Olympic Summer Games, hosting the
Games is considered a great honor. At the time the
Games will be held, the world will be facing severe
urbanization, demographic, economic and
environmental challenges. The increased pollution and
the global warming will be really an actual problem
since the effects of an increase in global temperature
include a rise in sea levels and a change in the amount
and pattern of precipitation, as well as a probable
expansion of subtropical deserts. The global
population will be around 8 billion person and we’ll be
much more diversified than now.
The city of San Francisco has planned many project
concerning the environmental and the sustainability
theme. Part of them will modify the urban structure of
the town, creating “Green tracks” or rebuilding part of
some district that are now unused or ruined.
Since the legacy of The Games is what a city will
forever have, it is crucial to generate a design that will
work in junction with the city and its inhabitants:
through the organization of the Games, these project
would be accelerated and completed by 2024, helping
the city to flourish and to avoid debt, since they would
be mostly financed by private sector and sponsors.
The Olympic Games are above all about sport and the
athletes, but they can be a catalyst for change and
produce important sustainability outcomes if they are
planned, managed and conducted in a way which
minimizes the adverse environmental impacts and
effects.
The Games would also be used to provide sustainable
environmental legacies, such as rehabilitated and
revitalized sites, increased environmental awareness
and improved environmental policies and practices.
In this contest, it is important to understand what the
Olympics mean to most of the world: the Olympics are
peace, unity, talent, grace, athleticism, thankfulness,
dedication, sympathy, empathy, heartache, and
celebration. Countries put aside their differences and
come together to celebrate and marvel over the
potential of the human form. People don’t wish pain
upon others, they wish only for human success. These
athletes understand the sacrifices their competitors
have made and show the utmost grace and respect to
each other. They are a model for how we as a people
should act toward one another.
We strongly believe that San Francisco is considered to
be a model concerning these themes, since the town
has always supported human rights and democracy,
multi-ethnic and multicultural life: it was the first city
recognizing LGBT community and it was the first city to
organize the Gay Games in 1982 (Tina
Turner performed at the opening ceremonies).
The town has always pushed for green economy, the
State of California encourages renewable energies and
electric cars. The region has always supported science
and technological jobs, and the result is that San
Francisco and the Silicon Valley is now one of the best
place to open valuable start-ups.
San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 7
I – Motivation, concept and legacy
03Concept
The San Francisco 2024 Olympics and Paralympics
Games will be a chance to show how it is possible to
organize such a worldwide event without wasting
materials, resources and money. It will be an example
of sustainability in the broadest sense. The
construction of sport facilities and equipment
requirements can constitute high nuisance and
environmental damage source if not properly planned.
Part of them has already been realized, like the
“WalkFirst” who has identify key walking streets
throughout the town and established a criteria to
prioritize pedestrian improvements in order to
improve pedestrian safety and walking conditions,
encourage walking, and enhance pedestrian
connections to key destinations. Many other project
could be ended by the Olympics 2024 and constitute a
legacy for the town, like “Green Connections” project,
that aims to increase access to parks, open spaces, and
the waterfront by envisioning a network of ‘green
connectors’, city streets that will be to make it safer
and more pleasant to travel to parks by walking, biking,
and other forms of active transportation. Or “The
Urban Forest Plan”, that will be a long-term
comprehensive plan that sets policy for the
management of the City's public and private trees.
For this reason, San Francisco want the Games to be
run primarily in existing or temporary facilities. The
existing transport system and venues of San Francisco,
The Bay-Area and the adjacent area will be able to
cope with the majority of the needs of the Olympics.
Of the 22 venues to be provided, 17 are already built
and The Olympic Village would be located at Hunter's
Point, an area that will be upgraded and will be used,
after the games, such as residential. The Olimpic
Stadium would be built temporary and it would be a
$350 million, 65,000-seat “pop-up” stadium on a damp
stretch of land in Brisbane where track and field events
and the Opening and Closing ceremonies would
beheld.
A decaying bayfront pier that has resisted development
plans for decades would become a beach volleyball
venue and then a new over-water park.
The only permanent facilities planned to be built are a
tennis center and BMX park on Treasure Island, which
would remain to serve the planned neighborhood
there, and a canoe slalom course in Vallejo.
Many projects related to San Francisco aim to make
the City more healthy, sustainable, and livable through
features such as pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure,
street trees and other landscaping, stormwater
management, and opportunities for beautification,
public art, and community stewardship.
San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 9
II – Political Support
04City Support
Bid to host the Olympics means above all being able to
plan everything into details from a structural, logistic
and safety point of view. No one of these aspects can
avoid to be affected by political supporting strategy.
We can recognise three different levels, starting from
the local up to the global side.
City support
In last December, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee told that
his city is the best place on heart to host the Olympic
Games in 2024 summer.
What about the local community's position?
So, not many extreme changes: the biggest addition
would be a temporary stadium near the bay in
Brisbane, a pop up structure which would be recycled
after the event is over: “for example, the seats would
go to local high school and colleges for their facilities”,
San Francisco Olympic Committee’s Steve Strandberg
said.
There are other reuse-oriented details in the plan, like
a “volleyball venue that would become a park after the
Olympics”, said Nathan Ballard, a spokesman for the
San Francisco 2024 group.
Another important citizenry's opinion leader is surely
Larry Baer, San Francisco Giants president, which is
working to win the Olympics for the fourth time (San
Francisco pursued the 2008 Games, for which the
USOC did not bid, as well as the 2012 and 2016
Olympics). Along with the swimmer Warner Cribbs, a
gold medalist in 1960 games, he represents the sport
leader on which put trust: “It just seems like it's sort of
our moment in time for this region to shine on the
international stage”.
San Francisco hosted the America’s Cup boating race in
2013, and will host Super Bowl 50 in 2016. The
Olympics are the real challenge this city wants to win.
The organization of an international event like this
could be unpopular: the cost of doing business is high,
something that could work against citizen's opinion in
crisis time. Some are still sour about what the
America's Cup sailing event cost the city last year, too.
Bad feelings are even more than the economics: San
Francisco suffered a huge embarrassment during the
domestic bidding process for the 2016 Games when a
stadium deal for the NFL's 49ers collapsed the day
before a key presentation in front of the U.S. Olympic
Committee.
Despite that, the city is actually in support of his
mayor, the first, real olympic supporter which promises
a smart building plan without wastes: “I’m going to say
very clearly we’re not going to be building white
elephants in our city or in our region”. Ed Lee, is on
board, and the San Francisco Chronicle editorial page
last month gave organizers a tentative thumbs-up,
saying the framework of the bid was “very
encouraging.”
That framework is focused on this kind of solution: a
temporary Olympic stadium that can be removed after
the Games, maximum use of existing sports venues,
and a pledge not to ask for public money, outside of
what would be spent for permanent transportation
improvements.
San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 11
II – Political Support
05State / Government Support
California support
California's governor Jerry Brown agrees with the San
Francisco 2024 Olympic project. He's also on board,
along with mayor Lee, supporting the essential idea
that moves this bid: sustainable. Only an eco-friendly
event without wastes, driven by smart and economic
standards of reuse can win. San Francisco has already
pursued the Olympics in a past not so far, and
California has a special feeling with this special event.
Los Angeles, has hosted the Olympics twice (for the
first time in 1932 and for its second time in 1984) and
made a habit of bidding just about every time the
Games are available. In 1984, Los Angeles finally
hosted its second Olympics in 1984, pioneering a low-
cost, privately funded event that is still the model for
US Olympic bids. On this way could run San Francisco's
bid, with the help of private sponsorships.
There are some important points to pay attention to:
· Giving parents helpful information and fostering
environments that support healthy choices
· Providing healthier foods in our schools
· Ensuring that every family has access to healthy,
affordable food.
· Helping kids become more physically active.
In this way, Olympic games in 2024 should be the peak
of a cultural revolution started in these years with an
only, real goal: change the bad habits and spread once
for all noble benefits of the athletic life.
U.S. Government support
In 13 June 2014, the USOC confirmed San Francisco's
bid for the 2024 Olympics. Games would be a great
opportunity to show in a prestigious way the
everlasting connection between United States of
America and sport. But during last years a new trend is
standing out, linked to the wellness world, especially
related to the new generations.
This kind of effort starts from the will of the Us
Government and could prepare the ground in view of
the most important sport event in the world, by
teaching people the health sense.

“Let’s Move!” is a comprehensive initiative, launched
by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the challenge of
childhood obesity within a generation, so that children
born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue
their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies
with common sense, “Let's Move!” is about putting
children on the path to a healthy future during their
earliest months and years.

06Legal Aspects Venue Commitments
In order to secure the venues necessary for staging the
various events of the Olympic Games (including
training facilities, broadcast centres and other
structures), BASOC with his legal has prepared a formal
memorandum of understanding (MOU) which has
been presented to the licensing authority for each of
the subject venues.
Each MOU confirms the commitment on the part of
the venue’s licensing authority to negotiate an
agreement with BASOC, and is very important in that it
is comprehensive and drafted for the purpose of
placing the venue on notice as to what is expected of it
in hosting SF2024.
To date, many of the memorandum, including all of the
San Francisco venues, have been executed, and the
others will be include soon.
Legal Obstacles
There is no legal obstacles and is not required a
referendum in the organisation of the Olympic Games
in San Francisco.
Since its inception, the Legal Committee has been
involved in the following efforts with respect to
BASOC’s bid.
What is BASOC?
BASOC (Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee) was
founded in May 1987 and is a California non – profit
public benefit corporation in active and good standing,
it promotes the sport in San Francisco Bay Area
organizing many sports events throughout Northern
California. The goal of BASOC is to host the Olympic
Games in San Francisco Bay Area in order to create a
Olympic Legacy that benefits diverse segments of the
population for generations to come and especially to
stimulate the local economy. The Board of the BASOC
is composed of at least 20% athletes or former
athletes and the remaining by professionals of the
legal sector.

07Budget and Revenue
From the Gold Rush to Silicon Valley, the San Francisco
Bay Area has long been known for its economic
innovation, and potential. Our bid reflects the region's
pioneering spirit, and builds upon existing resources.
The result is a fiscally responsible proposal that will
benefit the Bay Area far beyond the Olympic arena.
The estimated price tag for host the Olympic Games is
$4.5 billion. It's a privately financed plan relying in
large part on facilities we already have, some
temporary venues, and sites designed to last and
benefit San Franciscans, according to officials. Private
funding from international corporate sponsorships,
ticket sales and local sponsorships would cover
operating costs that’s amount about $4.5 billion.
Projected Expenditure
The San Francisco Bay Area has a number of existing
athletic facilities; hosting the Olympic Games would
require minimal investment for the construction of
new venues. The Bay Area also has a variety of local
colleges and universities to house Olympic officials and
staff. Furthermore, the Bay Area is currently the
number one tourist destination in the United States,
with efficient public transportation and an impressive
tourism infrastructure appropriate to host the Olympic
Games. Construction costs are estimated at no more
than $500 million in capital investments.
Impact on the economy
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, for
every $1 in direct spending, an estimated $2.25 will be
generated. Total economic activity in California should
increase by approximately $15 billion, with the
majority of the benefits accruing to the Bay Area
economy. The impact of the Olympic Games on the
California economy will be felt over an extended
period. Showcasing the San Francisco Bay Area during
the worldwide broadcast will be worth millions of
dollars, increasing tourism long after the Games.
Public funds are anticipated to go toward
transportation upgrades, including ones already
planned, such as the electrification of the Caltrain line
and extending it to the Transbay Transit Center now
under construction. Our certified studies estimates
that hosting the Olympic Games in 2012 will bring
approximately $15 billion to the local economy.
Revenue
It is projected that approximately $5 billion to $7.5
billion in revenues will be generated from the sale of
broadcast rights, tickets, sponsorships, Olympic-related
merchandise and other items. Broadcast contracts are
expected to amount to approximately $1 billion to $2
billion. Financial assurances from state and local
government will be a major factor in attracting the
2024 Olympic Games. We are confident that private
funding will be sufficient to cover expenses.
Revenues of Visitors
The San Francisco Bay Area will experience a significant
increase in visitor spending due to the 2024 Olympic
Games. Approximately 1 million visitors will be
present on any given day during the Olympic Games,
with 50 percent of those visitors staying in hotels.

San Francisco Bay Area is home to many of the world's
largest corporations, expecially technology companies
setted in the Southern area, called Silicon Valley.
Many of these represent at the same time a local pride
and a world excellence, just the best way to support a
smart and sustainable Olympic Games edition.
Here's a list of some of the most important companies
that will support San Francisco in terms of sponsorship
and supply.
Apple Inc.
This global brand will be a strong support not only in
an economic way, but even by providing its products.
The entire olympic village will be covered by the most
advanced hardware solutions from Cupertino.
Testla Motors
Living into a totally eco-design oriented scene, every
athlete will move in the olympic village thanks to the
electric car company from Palo Alto: only kick scooters
and minivehicles severely clean energy powered.

San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 19
IV – Venues
09Competition Venues
The Olympic Park and the other Olympic venues will be
at San Francisco and in the Bay Area. The San Francisco
Bay Area offers the best competitive conditions for the
2024 Olympic Games and is the natural arena to host
the Grand Olympic pageant.
While San Francisco is the candidate city, the proposal
for the Games is a regional effort. Venues stretch from
San Pablo Reservoir in the East Bay for rowing to the
San Jose Convention Centre for judo, wrestling and
taekwondo but 13 of the 22 venues will be at San
Francisco.
All the Olympic Venues will be set with a wireless
connection thanks to Cisco System’s partnership. In
addition, SF2024 taking advantage the partnership
with Google, will have a specific mobile application to
help athletes and audience in moving and checking
sport schedules and to find all the info about the
Games.
San Francisco want to apply the model used in London
2012. The Games were concentrated primarily in
existing, temporary facilities. The idea is to contain
costs in an era when the Olympic Games, particularly
in Beijing 2008 and Sochi 2024, have often been
marked by profligate public spending on facilities that
sit vacant afterward.
Of the 22 venues to be provided, 17 of the 22 are
already built and some of them will be temporary; in
development the new Arena for the NBA’s team
Golden State Warriors in San Francisco’s Mission Bay, a
multi – use indoor arena of 18.000 – seat that will be
ready for the 2018 – 2019 NBA season.
The arena project will be financed privately and it will
host basketball and gymnastic during the Games.
While the only permanent facilities planned to be built
are a tennis centre and a BMX Park on Treasure Island
and a canoe slalom course in San Pablo Bay.
Linked to the Warriors Arena is the particular case of
Piers 30 & 32, a 13 – acre concrete slab with gorgeous
views of the Bay Bridge, chosen as the venue for the
beach volleyball’s competition.
The piers have been a graveyard for development
proposals by six groups since 1993, most recently the
Warriors, who this year wanted to build the new arena
there. The project faced political and neighbourhood
opposition and the piers would have needed $180
million in structural work.
The Olympic Games can represent the solution to
repair the piers for a lighter use such as volleyball and
to turn it into a park afterward.

10Olympic Stadium The Olympic Park will be located in the South Eastern
portion of San Francisco, on an undeveloped stretch of
open space between the hills of Brisbane and the
abandoned hulk of Candlestick Park, known as the
Brisbane Baylands, lies the heart of the Bay Area’s
Olympic.
A temporary stadium of 65,000 – to 70,000 seat will be
built along Highway 101 in Brisbane and will host the
opening and closing ceremonies as well as the track
and field events. The investments for this “pop up”
stadium projected to being the Olympic Stadium will
be around $350 million.
Different amenities in the area (aside from sporting
venues) are meant to increase usability of the site and
the amount of people entering area.
The new Olympic Stadium would be down and its
materials repurposed after the games have ended. The
goal is try to minimize the cost of taxpayers by using
existing venues and temporary venues such as the
Brisbane stadium as much as possible. The Olympic Stadium of Brisbane

11Olympic Village
The residential building masses are along the outskirts
of the village to provide the athletes with privacy when
training and when using the centralized public use
areas. The centre courtyards of each building will allow
to athletes to relax and enjoy their time at the San
Francisco Olympic Village and to focus on their
upcoming events.
The Olympic Village will include training, commercial
area as well as recreational facilities. How we can see
in the figure 4, there are many facilities available to
athletes, in this way they have all amenities within
Olympic Village and they have not to go out e and to
deal with the fans, tourist and the masses of journalist
ready to have a statement or a scoop. The Olympic
Village itself is not open to the public and can only be
accessed by those with special privileges.
The Olympic Village, where athletes stay during the
games, will be at the old Hunters Point Shipyard in San
Francisco’s Bayview neighbourhood. The Olympic
Village construction will be financed by the private
sector as part of a redevelopment project (The Hunters
Point Redevelopment Plan).
The area is undergoing major residential and
commercial development in fact after the Games it will
be a liveable neighbourhood for many people.
During the Olympic Games, athletes, officials and
trainers live in a dorm – style units. Between 17.500
and 18.000 people stay in the Olympic Village. Looking
at the Olympic Village of the London Olympics, units
for the San Francisco Olympics will also have an
average of 5.45 people per unit. The result is that will
be at least 3,303 units. In fact, the design contains
3,495 total units.

12Hotels
San Francisco Hotel Industry Facts
•Hotel rooms in San Francisco (city/county limits):
33,642 (as of September 2014).
•According to PKF Consulting there are 215 Hotels in
San Francisco.
•Approximately 20,000 of these rooms are within
walking distance of the Moscone Center.
•Hotel Tax Rate: 14%.
•Hotel Occupancy Taxes and Fees - Comparative Cities
Housing
With lodging being a determining factor in choosing an
host city, it is essential to look at the different types of
housing options for those coming to San Francisco and
the Bay Area (excluding athletes and those who will be
in the Olympic Village).
As of September 2014, there were 33,642 hotel rooms
in San Francisco and 215 hotels. On average, 2 people
stay in each hotel room (“San Francisco Visitor”).
With the different venues spread throughout the Bay
Area, not all of the visitors will be staying in San
Francisco. With other urban cities surrounding San
Francisco, there will be enough hotels to support the
influx of people to the area.
The university campuses in the area can also serve as
hotels. Different college campuses with student
housing that could possibly be used during the
Olympics are the University of California: Berkeley,
University of San Francisco, San Francisco State
University, San Jose State University, Sacramento State
University, and University of California: Davis.
We thought of using multiple cruises by the seaside in
order to improve the number of rooms available during
the Olympic time.
San Francisco Hotel Guest Profile
Overnight hotel guests account for more than two of
every three dollars spent locally by out-of-town visitors
despite representing only 1/3 of all visitors to the city
(the balance stayed either in private homes with
friends or relatives, stayed in hotels outside the city
though San Francisco was their primary destination, or
were day visitors from nearby areas).
• Average annual household income: $118,000
• Average spending in SF (per person, per day):
$240.31
• First-time San Francisco visitors: 27.2%
• Traveling with children: 17.2%
• Average age: 43 years old
• Average nights in San Francisco hotels: 3.5 nights
• People per room: 2.0
• Arrived by air: 69.2%
San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 27
V – Accomodation
13Media Accomodation / Tourism Visitors
San Francisco hosted 16.9 million visitors in 2013,
including hotel guests, those staying with friends and
relatives, those staying in accommodations outside the
city but whose primary destination was San Francisco,
and regional visitors driving in for the day. Visitor
spending reached the highest ever in 2013, with more
than $9.38 billion spent in local businesses(up 2.3%
from 2012). This means during an average day in San
Francisco, 134,231 visitors are spending $25.7 million
daily (including spending related to meetings and
conventions).
This massive injection of visitor dollars directly
supports local hotels, restaurants, shops, attractions,
and cultural institutions. It also indirectly boosts
practically every segment of the city's economy and
has a broad positive influence on government finances
- some $607 million in tax and fee revenue flowed into
the City and County of San Francisco in 2013, up 8.1%
from the previous year.
The Importance of Tourism
According to Destination Analysts, Inc. San Francisco
Resident Survey, the number of jobs supported by
tourism rose 3.8% in 2013, totaling 76,834 jobs with an
annual payroll of $2.31 billion (up 5.7% from 2012).
In addition, 53% of residents believe tourism is San
Francisco's most important industry, and 98% believe
tourism is very important or important to the vitality of
San Francisco's economy. 82% of residents disagree
that "San Francisco has too many tourists" and 78%
believe tourism makes San Francisco a better place to
live.
Media Accomodation
For the accredited media we thought of creating a
media village in the proximity of the Olympic venues.
Ideally we would like ensure that media will be very
close to each competition venue with a minimal
journey time.
A media shuttle bus service will be in operation
around the clock in order to provide efficient and
confortable access to all media working during the
Olympic games.
San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 29
VI – Transport
14General Infrastructures
San Francisco and the Bay Area have the benefit of
having an adequate and extensive transportation
system as well as three international airports
located within the area. Our transports will allowed all
visitors, athletes, staff and media to reach efficiency,
quickly and safety all places of interest.
• Transport must be safe and secure.
• Transport must be “absolutely” reliable.
• Transport must be efficient, comfortable, convivial
and must guarantee short ravel time especially for
athletes and the media.
• Transport must be flexible to mitigate risk of
interruptions.
• Transport shall be environmentally friendly.
• Transport shall contribute to a strong host city and
regional mobility legacy.
All necessary transportation is already in place to serve
the needs of the 2024 Olympic Games in San Francisco
Bay Area.
Two additional projects that will enhance the spectator
transportation system but also be useful to local
population after the Olympic Games are the extension
of BART along the East Bay to San Josè and the
electrification of Caltrain. These two big projects will
be accomplished according to the ecofriendly philosofy
typical of SF 2024.
The projects had already received approval from the
voters and 80% of the costs of the projects are funded
locally. San Francisco 2024 aligns perfectly with the
direction of the IOC for the future Games, reying on
existing public tranportation infrastructure for
spectators in a compact but distributed venue plan
that does not overload the systems.

San Jose International Airport (SJC)
San Jose International Airport (SJC) is the only major
airport in California's Santa Clara County, and handles
around 11 million passengers a year to a range of
domestic destinations. Located just two miles north of
downtown San Jose, in the South Bay region of
California, Norman Y. Mineta San Jose Airport also
caters for international arrivals.
San Jose Airport features two Terminals that offer the
most modern services and facilities. A development
program currently underway involves terminal
construction, access improvements, parking garages
and airfield upgrades. SJC airport provides a choice of
ground transportation options and disabled facilities.
Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), Bay Area Rapid
Transport (BART) and Amtrak stations are in close
proximity to the San Jose International Airport.
Oakland International Airport (OAK)
Oakland International Airport (OAK) is located 12 miles
(19 km) from Oakland, northern California, and serves
around 15 million annual passengers to and from the
San Francisco Bay Area metro region. Oakland Airport
is one of three international airports in the San
Francisco Bay area, and benefits from excellent
transport links to Oakland and San Francisco.
OAK is also the closest airport to the San Francisco
financial district.
Two big advantages of OAK are the high on-time arrival
percentage, in 2009 OAK had the highest on-time
arrival percentage among the 40 busiest North
American airports and the extreme proximity of the
parking. OAK offers an extensive choice of parking
options cover valet, short and long term options with
shuttle linking passengers to the terminal building.
Oakland Airport is also amongst the top 30 airports for
cargo volume in the world.
The Oakland International Airport has a variety of
transportation options available for travelers passing
through its doors. These options include Taxis,
Bus/Shuttle Services, and Public Bus Service.
San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
San Francisco International Airport is a world-class
airport, linking international and domestic
destinations, serving over 45 million passengers a year,
with links throughout North America and around the
world. Described as the ‘gateway to the Pacific’, San
Francisco International Airport (SFO) is one of the
major entry and departure points for passengers
coming from or going to Asia.
It repeatedly ranks among the top 30 busiest airports
worldwide and was the first major airport in the USA
to fully automate an integrated baggage system. This
airport offers non-stop flights to more than 31
international cities on 30 international carriers. The
Bay Area's largest airport connects non-stop with 76
cities in the U.S. on 15 domestic airlines.
SFO is consistently recognized by the industry of
aviation and by travelers for its excellent facilities and
great customer service. In 2012, Frequent Business
Traveler named SFO the best airport in the American
continent, and Skytrax, the largest site for reviews on
airports and airlines, awarded for the excellence of its
SFO airport staff.

Caltrain
Caltrain is a California commuter rail line on the San
Francisco peninsula and in the Santa Clara Valley. The
north end of the line is San Francisco, at 4th and King
streets; its south end is Gilroy. Trains leave San
Francisco and San Jose about hourly on weekdays, or
more frequently during commute hours and for special
events like the Summer Games. Caltrain will be
improved as a electrification over all line.
Street and Freeways
The extensive freeway system running throughout the
Bay Area allows for rapid movements of large groups
of people. The grid-like layout of San Francisco also
makes navigating the city relatively easy for tourists
visiting the area.
San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI)
Muni is the primary transit operator within San
Francisco. Its extensive network of bus, trolleybus,
streetcar, and cable car lines serve every tourist
destination, shopping district, and residential
neighborhood located within the City limits.
SF Muni operates approximately 80 routes with stops
within 2 blocks of 90% of all residences in the city. The
venues chosen for San Francisco will be all accessible
by Muni and within walking distance from Muni lines.
Ferries
The ferry routes throughout the San Francisco Bay will
cross the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. This will
allow for another means of transportation for those
trying to reach the host city or venues. The ferry ports
in San Francisco are located near Muni stops, allowing
for enabling easier circulation around San Francisco.
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART)
BART is the primary regional transit operator in the Bay
Area. Its extensive train network connects San
Francisco with Peninsula Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont,
Walnut Creek, Dublin/Pleasanton and other cities in
the East Bay; also it connects both area airports SFO
(via direct train service) and OAK (via an "AirBART" bus
connection).
It connects the San Francisco Peninsula with For more
than 40 years BART has provided fast, reliable
transportation to downtown offices, shopping centers,
tourist attractions, entertainment venues, universities
and other destinations for Bay Area residents and
visitors alike.
There’s already a project to extend the line to San José.

Ultimate Responsibility for Security
The Superintendent-General of the San Francisco
Police Department (SFPD), one of the world’s largest
police forces, will have ultimate responsibility for
security in San Francisco during the Olympic Games.
This responsibility applies at all stages, through
planning to preparation and implementation of
security at Games-time. Furthermore, the
Superintendent-General will be responsible for
coordination with Crime Prevention Company, SWAT
team and through the Agency, with other prefectural
police forces for events outside San Francisco and for
coordination with security and intelligence agencies
which will provide integrated support.
In addition, highly specialised vehicles and equipment,
such as vehicles equipped with explosive
countermeasure devices, marine vessels, helicopters,
and surveillance cameras, will be used to respond to
any crime or disaster with prompt mobility.
In close collaboration with the police, the director of
the OCOG security will ensure that there is a full
understanding of Olympic requirements of security and
will liaise with the security-related organisations in the
planning and operation.
Based on the analysis of security requirements from
past Olympic Games as well as current technological
trends, security equipment with the world’s highest
standards will be installed at the venues during the
Olympic Games. Security cameras will have proven,
cutting-edge American image analysing technologies
and intrusion alarms, and the ID cards and
accreditation system will be equipped with the latest
technologies.
Thorough security systems were successfully set up in
recent major international sports events, including the
1996 Atlanta City Olympic Games and the 2002 Salt
Lake City Olympic Winter Games, as well as the
summit meetings hosted in United States. Taking full
advantage of the knowledge and experience gained in
the past, the responsible organisations will do
everything within their power to assure a safe
environment and operation.
The command and control of the police force in all the
prefectures lie with the SFPD. Furthermore, the
accountability is quite clear in the case of a national
security crisis, such as a large-scale terrorist attack,
which must engage the agencies and response
capabilities of the National Government.
Under laws and under well-established procedures for
managing such situations, the Prime Minister of United
States assumes ultimate responsibility. Under his
leadership, the relevant government authorities
including the Cabinet Secretariat; the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure and Transport; the Ministry of Justice;
and the Ministry of Defence collaborate through a
system that is capable of responding to such crises.
Security Resources
Securing the number of personnel at a level equivalent
to the requirements of past Olympic Games is well
within the capacity of the present forces. The SFPD is
responsible for the resources throughout the city and
is to be seconded from other prefectural police forces
if necessary. Private security firms may be used to
provide the security resources within the venues.
Consistent with common practice at Olympic Games,
volunteers will be used for many “soft security”
functions, such as ticket checking.
During the Games, police personnel will be positioned
with priority given to the Olympic-related venues.

VII – General conditions, public opinion and experience
20Environmental
Mindset
San Francisco 2024 has adopted a unique approach to
organizing the management of the Olympic Games
minimizing the environment risk bu placing
environmental management at the core of the
management philosophy and operations plan.
The depth of the environmental commitment in San
Francisco 2024’s plan will be recognized as a new
standard of sustainable excellence for global multi-
sport events within the worldwide community of
experts who understand the impact of sports on the
environment.
Venues
The Energy Center is a crucial aspect to every Olympic
Games. The Energy Center will aid in powering the
Olympic Village as well as sporting venues of the
Games. It also encouraged that most of the energy
used on site be from renewable sources like wind,
solar, hydro, geothermal taking advantage of the
physical characteristic of the San Francisco Bay Area. In
fact the city of San Francisco has developed a number
of innovative policies and programs to move the city
toward its goal of 100% renewable energy to become a
cleaner, healthier and more sustainability city.
In addition to the use of the renewable sources most
of the area around Olympic Village is characterized of
natural vegetation and greenery and the Hunters Point
Redevelopment Plan works to improve the amount
and the quality of green spaces in the area.
Parks
There are more than 220 parks maintained by the San
Francisco Recreation & Parks Department. The largest
and best-known city park is Golden Gate Park, which
stretches from the center of the city west to the Pacific
Ocean.
Transports
In order to be considered a “green” city we have
already start a big conversion of transports that is
powered by renewable energy sources like solar, wind,
electricity and biofuels.
Green Connections aims to increase access to parks,
open spaces, and the waterfront by envisioning a
network of ‘green connectors’ – city streets that will be
upgraded incrementally over the next 20 years to make
it safer and more pleasant to travel to parks by
walking, biking, and other forms of active
transportation.
The project aims to make the City more healthy,
sustainable, and livable through features such as
pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, street trees and
other landscaping, stormwater management, and
opportunities for beautification, public art, and
community stewardship.
We estimate that 12% of all spectators will use bicycle
and electric bicycle to reach venues, San Francisco has
a system of bike paths efficient and branched all over
the city. We will provide electric bicycle at all park-n-
ride locations to give spectators the opportunity to
ride to the venue rather than board a shuttle bus. The
venues will feature secure bicycle parking, a system
that has proven very successful a most major events in
SF.
San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 43
VII – General conditions, public opinion and experience
21Public Opinion
General Public Opinion
The last Olympic Games in USA was Atlanta 1996. After
30 years, San Francisco is the US city candidate to host
Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. We are sure
that every US citizen is supporting us to reach this goal.
Americans are proudly part of USA, sincerely
nationalists supporting every international events,
because they think the United States of America is the
best country in the world.
The SF2024 Olympic Bid is the first international main
sport event for San Francisco and the surrounding
cities, so we estimate a strong public opinion
supporting our decision.
It’s time for this area to have a global attention
improving and sharing our image in the world. Citizens
in this area have the best quality of life in the US
improving years by years, they are concerning about
environmental, green economy, private rights, different
and various events, Hi-Tech businesses and tourism.
Also, San Francisco is commonly recognized as one of
the most famous Capitol in the world for its long
history and for having an Europe charm. We aim to be
the best choice among the other cities running for the
Olympic bid 2024.
Opposition
Part of the public opinion in San Francisco is worried
about public funds to cover the costs. To reassure
those citizens we plan Olympic Games totally financed
by private investments, asking sponsorship to several
hi-tech industries in our territory and designing the
Olympic Village to leave as legacy private and
commercial buildings. We want to follow the Barcelona
and Sydney experience regarding Olympic Games low
cost and high image return.
There are many reasons why USA is the best choice for
the Olympic Games 2024: it’s the first economy in the
world; one of the countries with the highest ethnic
diversity, product of large-scale immigration from
every continents; first country in the medal all-time at
the Summer Olympic Games, with medals won in
2321; a country that has already organized eight
editions of the Olympic Games since 1986; a strong
mentality in dramatization of the events; the
“American Dream”, the idea that with hard work,
courage and self-determination a person can earn a
better life. As shown USA has powerful values in
according with the Olympics games’ ones.
Olympics Games in “San Francisco Bay Area”
We argue that SF2024 could be a great opportunity not
only for San Francisco City, but also for the whole San
Francisco Bay Area, in which there will locate part of
the Olympics Games. In this way, the organization will
be split in different areas including main cities like
Oakland, Berkeley, San José, Stockton, Fremont, Santa
Rosa, Santa Clara.
Indeed, the project concerning not only a single city,
but a spread zone “The San Francisco Bay Area”, in
order to create a big community hosting the Olympics
Games and to divide the costs structures.
San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 45
VII – General conditions, public opinion and experience
22Experience
Sports and past events
San Francisco has got a long tradition in regards to
culture and sport events. There are seven major league
sports franchises in the San Francisco Bay Area, like 2
teams of Footbal (Oakland Raiders, San Francisco
49ers), 2 team of Baseball (Oakland Athletics, San
Francisco Giants), basketball (Golden State Warriors),
hockey (San José Sharks) and soccer (San José
Earthquakes); most of them were found in ’60.
Every year since 1912 there’s the Bay to Breakers
footrace, which is the best known for colourful
costumes and a celebratory community spirit. The San
Francisco Marathon counts more than 21.000
participants and the Triathlon Challenge, named
“Escape from Alcatraz”, attracts 2000 top professional
and amateur athletes every years.
The Olympic Club, founded in 1860, is the oldest
athletic club in the United States. Regarding golf, San
Francisco has hosted the US Open on five occasions
and also the public Harding Park Golf Course is an
occasional stop on the PGA Tour.
San Francisco hosted the 2013 America's Cup yacht
racing competition.
Stanford and Berkeley, the two majors university in
California, are helding on yearly bases some of the
most important college championship.

23Meteorology
The climate of San Francisco Bay Area
The sharp topography and maritime surroundings of
San Francisco combine with the unique California
climate to produce a number of extremely varied
microclimates within its 46 square miles.
California's location in the middle latitudes and on the
west coast of the North American continent, places it
in the relatively rare Mediterranean type climate.
The only other regions of the earth sharing this climate
type are the southwestern tip of Africa, the west coast
of Chile, the west coast of Australia, and of course, the
region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea (Critchfield,
1966). This type of climate type is generally
characterized by moist mild winters and dry summers.

  • 5. I – Motivation, concept and legacy 01Dates of the Olympic Games Olympic Games: 20thJuly – 3rdAugust Paralympic Games: 17thAugust – 31stAugust The climate is great since the average temperatures are around 15° degrees and the rains are idle than any other time of the year. This will allow the athletes to compete in the best climatic conditions because it will not be neither too hot nor too cold. Schools will be in the summer break and so there will be no traffic due to school schedules and public transport will be less crowded. In addition, a large number of high school and university students will be able to work together as volunteers in the organization of the games. Each summer, San Francisco attracts itself a lot of tourist who come to visit the town and its most known monument such as the world famous Golden Gate bridge, the mysterious Alcatraz, the old fashioned Cable Cars, The Fisherman’s Warf with its sealion basking in the sun, the Painted Ladies. • 7. I – Motivation, concept and legacy 02Motivation, Legacy Every four years, the world comes together to watch the world’s greatest athletes compete in a two and a half week long event. With national pride booming during the Olympic Summer Games, hosting the Games is considered a great honor. At the time the Games will be held, the world will be facing severe urbanization, demographic, economic and environmental challenges. The increased pollution and the global warming will be really an actual problem since the effects of an increase in global temperature include a rise in sea levels and a change in the amount and pattern of precipitation, as well as a probable expansion of subtropical deserts. The global population will be around 8 billion person and we’ll be much more diversified than now. The city of San Francisco has planned many project concerning the environmental and the sustainability theme. Part of them will modify the urban structure of the town, creating “Green tracks” or rebuilding part of some district that are now unused or ruined. Since the legacy of The Games is what a city will forever have, it is crucial to generate a design that will work in junction with the city and its inhabitants: through the organization of the Games, these project would be accelerated and completed by 2024, helping the city to flourish and to avoid debt, since they would be mostly financed by private sector and sponsors. The Olympic Games are above all about sport and the athletes, but they can be a catalyst for change and produce important sustainability outcomes if they are planned, managed and conducted in a way which minimizes the adverse environmental impacts and effects. The Games would also be used to provide sustainable environmental legacies, such as rehabilitated and revitalized sites, increased environmental awareness and improved environmental policies and practices. In this contest, it is important to understand what the Olympics mean to most of the world: the Olympics are peace, unity, talent, grace, athleticism, thankfulness, dedication, sympathy, empathy, heartache, and celebration. Countries put aside their differences and come together to celebrate and marvel over the potential of the human form. People don’t wish pain upon others, they wish only for human success. These athletes understand the sacrifices their competitors have made and show the utmost grace and respect to each other. They are a model for how we as a people should act toward one another. We strongly believe that San Francisco is considered to be a model concerning these themes, since the town has always supported human rights and democracy, multi-ethnic and multicultural life: it was the first city recognizing LGBT community and it was the first city to organize the Gay Games in 1982 (Tina Turner performed at the opening ceremonies). The town has always pushed for green economy, the State of California encourages renewable energies and electric cars. The region has always supported science and technological jobs, and the result is that San Francisco and the Silicon Valley is now one of the best place to open valuable start-ups. • 9. I – Motivation, concept and legacy 03Concept The San Francisco 2024 Olympics and Paralympics Games will be a chance to show how it is possible to organize such a worldwide event without wasting materials, resources and money. It will be an example of sustainability in the broadest sense. The construction of sport facilities and equipment requirements can constitute high nuisance and environmental damage source if not properly planned. Part of them has already been realized, like the “WalkFirst” who has identify key walking streets throughout the town and established a criteria to prioritize pedestrian improvements in order to improve pedestrian safety and walking conditions, encourage walking, and enhance pedestrian connections to key destinations. Many other project could be ended by the Olympics 2024 and constitute a legacy for the town, like “Green Connections” project, that aims to increase access to parks, open spaces, and the waterfront by envisioning a network of ‘green connectors’, city streets that will be to make it safer and more pleasant to travel to parks by walking, biking, and other forms of active transportation. Or “The Urban Forest Plan”, that will be a long-term comprehensive plan that sets policy for the management of the City's public and private trees. For this reason, San Francisco want the Games to be run primarily in existing or temporary facilities. The existing transport system and venues of San Francisco, The Bay-Area and the adjacent area will be able to cope with the majority of the needs of the Olympics. Of the 22 venues to be provided, 17 are already built and The Olympic Village would be located at Hunter's Point, an area that will be upgraded and will be used, after the games, such as residential. The Olimpic Stadium would be built temporary and it would be a $350 million, 65,000-seat “pop-up” stadium on a damp stretch of land in Brisbane where track and field events and the Opening and Closing ceremonies would beheld. A decaying bayfront pier that has resisted development plans for decades would become a beach volleyball venue and then a new over-water park. The only permanent facilities planned to be built are a tennis center and BMX park on Treasure Island, which would remain to serve the planned neighborhood there, and a canoe slalom course in Vallejo. Many projects related to San Francisco aim to make the City more healthy, sustainable, and livable through features such as pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, street trees and other landscaping, stormwater management, and opportunities for beautification, public art, and community stewardship. • 11. II – Political Support 04City Support Bid to host the Olympics means above all being able to plan everything into details from a structural, logistic and safety point of view. No one of these aspects can avoid to be affected by political supporting strategy. We can recognise three different levels, starting from the local up to the global side. City support In last December, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee told that his city is the best place on heart to host the Olympic Games in 2024 summer. What about the local community's position? So, not many extreme changes: the biggest addition would be a temporary stadium near the bay in Brisbane, a pop up structure which would be recycled after the event is over: “for example, the seats would go to local high school and colleges for their facilities”, San Francisco Olympic Committee’s Steve Strandberg said. There are other reuse-oriented details in the plan, like a “volleyball venue that would become a park after the Olympics”, said Nathan Ballard, a spokesman for the San Francisco 2024 group. Another important citizenry's opinion leader is surely Larry Baer, San Francisco Giants president, which is working to win the Olympics for the fourth time (San Francisco pursued the 2008 Games, for which the USOC did not bid, as well as the 2012 and 2016 Olympics). Along with the swimmer Warner Cribbs, a gold medalist in 1960 games, he represents the sport leader on which put trust: “It just seems like it's sort of our moment in time for this region to shine on the international stage”. San Francisco hosted the America’s Cup boating race in 2013, and will host Super Bowl 50 in 2016. The Olympics are the real challenge this city wants to win. The organization of an international event like this could be unpopular: the cost of doing business is high, something that could work against citizen's opinion in crisis time. Some are still sour about what the America's Cup sailing event cost the city last year, too. Bad feelings are even more than the economics: San Francisco suffered a huge embarrassment during the domestic bidding process for the 2016 Games when a stadium deal for the NFL's 49ers collapsed the day before a key presentation in front of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Despite that, the city is actually in support of his mayor, the first, real olympic supporter which promises a smart building plan without wastes: “I’m going to say very clearly we’re not going to be building white elephants in our city or in our region”. Ed Lee, is on board, and the San Francisco Chronicle editorial page last month gave organizers a tentative thumbs-up, saying the framework of the bid was “very encouraging.” That framework is focused on this kind of solution: a temporary Olympic stadium that can be removed after the Games, maximum use of existing sports venues, and a pledge not to ask for public money, outside of what would be spent for permanent transportation improvements. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 11
  • 12.
  • 13. II – Political Support 05State / Government Support California support California's governor Jerry Brown agrees with the San Francisco 2024 Olympic project. He's also on board, along with mayor Lee, supporting the essential idea that moves this bid: sustainable. Only an eco-friendly event without wastes, driven by smart and economic standards of reuse can win. San Francisco has already pursued the Olympics in a past not so far, and California has a special feeling with this special event. Los Angeles, has hosted the Olympics twice (for the first time in 1932 and for its second time in 1984) and made a habit of bidding just about every time the Games are available. In 1984, Los Angeles finally hosted its second Olympics in 1984, pioneering a low- cost, privately funded event that is still the model for US Olympic bids. On this way could run San Francisco's bid, with the help of private sponsorships. There are some important points to pay attention to: · Giving parents helpful information and fostering environments that support healthy choices · Providing healthier foods in our schools · Ensuring that every family has access to healthy, affordable food. · Helping kids become more physically active. In this way, Olympic games in 2024 should be the peak of a cultural revolution started in these years with an only, real goal: change the bad habits and spread once for all noble benefits of the athletic life. U.S. Government support In 13 June 2014, the USOC confirmed San Francisco's bid for the 2024 Olympics. Games would be a great opportunity to show in a prestigious way the everlasting connection between United States of America and sport. But during last years a new trend is standing out, linked to the wellness world, especially related to the new generations. This kind of effort starts from the will of the Us Government and could prepare the ground in view of the most important sport event in the world, by teaching people the health sense. This kind of effort starts from the will of the Us Government and could prepare the ground in view of the most important sport event in the world, by teaching people the health sense. “Let’s Move!” is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, “Let's Move!” is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. • 15. II – Political Support 06Legal Aspects Venue Commitments In order to secure the venues necessary for staging the various events of the Olympic Games (including training facilities, broadcast centres and other structures), BASOC with his legal has prepared a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) which has been presented to the licensing authority for each of the subject venues. Each MOU confirms the commitment on the part of the venue’s licensing authority to negotiate an agreement with BASOC, and is very important in that it is comprehensive and drafted for the purpose of placing the venue on notice as to what is expected of it in hosting SF2024. To date, many of the memorandum, including all of the San Francisco venues, have been executed, and the others will be include soon. Legal Obstacles There is no legal obstacles and is not required a referendum in the organisation of the Olympic Games in San Francisco. Since its inception, the Legal Committee has been involved in the following efforts with respect to BASOC’s bid. What is BASOC? BASOC (Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee) was founded in May 1987 and is a California non – profit public benefit corporation in active and good standing, it promotes the sport in San Francisco Bay Area organizing many sports events throughout Northern California. The goal of BASOC is to host the Olympic Games in San Francisco Bay Area in order to create a Olympic Legacy that benefits diverse segments of the population for generations to come and especially to stimulate the local economy. The Board of the BASOC is composed of at least 20% athletes or former athletes and the remaining by professionals of the legal sector. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 15

  • 17. III – Finance 07Budget and Revenue From the Gold Rush to Silicon Valley, the San Francisco Bay Area has long been known for its economic innovation, and potential. Our bid reflects the region's pioneering spirit, and builds upon existing resources. The result is a fiscally responsible proposal that will benefit the Bay Area far beyond the Olympic arena. The estimated price tag for host the Olympic Games is $4.5 billion. It's a privately financed plan relying in large part on facilities we already have, some temporary venues, and sites designed to last and benefit San Franciscans, according to officials. Private funding from international corporate sponsorships, ticket sales and local sponsorships would cover operating costs that’s amount about $4.5 billion. Projected Expenditure The San Francisco Bay Area has a number of existing athletic facilities; hosting the Olympic Games would require minimal investment for the construction of new venues. The Bay Area also has a variety of local colleges and universities to house Olympic officials and staff. Furthermore, the Bay Area is currently the number one tourist destination in the United States, with efficient public transportation and an impressive tourism infrastructure appropriate to host the Olympic Games. Construction costs are estimated at no more than $500 million in capital investments. Impact on the economy According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, for every $1 in direct spending, an estimated $2.25 will be generated. Total economic activity in California should increase by approximately $15 billion, with the majority of the benefits accruing to the Bay Area economy. The impact of the Olympic Games on the California economy will be felt over an extended period. Showcasing the San Francisco Bay Area during the worldwide broadcast will be worth millions of dollars, increasing tourism long after the Games. Public funds are anticipated to go toward transportation upgrades, including ones already planned, such as the electrification of the Caltrain line and extending it to the Transbay Transit Center now under construction. Our certified studies estimates that hosting the Olympic Games in 2012 will bring approximately $15 billion to the local economy. Revenue It is projected that approximately $5 billion to $7.5 billion in revenues will be generated from the sale of broadcast rights, tickets, sponsorships, Olympic-related merchandise and other items. Broadcast contracts are expected to amount to approximately $1 billion to $2 billion. Financial assurances from state and local government will be a major factor in attracting the 2024 Olympic Games. We are confident that private funding will be sufficient to cover expenses. Revenues of Visitors The San Francisco Bay Area will experience a significant increase in visitor spending due to the 2024 Olympic Games. Approximately 1 million visitors will be present on any given day during the Olympic Games, with 50 percent of those visitors staying in hotels. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 17

  • 19. III – Finance 08Sporsorship and Partners Other companies headquartered in Silicon Valley: Google Oracle Corporation Ebay Facebook Twitter Hewlett-Packard Netflix (streaming broadcast) Paypal Electronic Arts Inc. Intel AMD Western Digitals Yahoo! Adobe System SanDisk Symantec US companies could support SF2024: Coca-Cola McDonald's Nike Visa P&G Wal-Mart AT&T San Francisco Bay Area is home to many of the world's largest corporations, expecially technology companies setted in the Southern area, called Silicon Valley. Many of these represent at the same time a local pride and a world excellence, just the best way to support a smart and sustainable Olympic Games edition. Here's a list of some of the most important companies that will support San Francisco in terms of sponsorship and supply. Apple Inc. This global brand will be a strong support not only in an economic way, but even by providing its products. The entire olympic village will be covered by the most advanced hardware solutions from Cupertino. Testla Motors Living into a totally eco-design oriented scene, every athlete will move in the olympic village thanks to the electric car company from Palo Alto: only kick scooters and minivehicles severely clean energy powered. Cysco Sistems Inc. Cysco will offer its long tradition in neworking equipment and software solutions during the Olympics. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 19
  • 20.
  • 21. IV – Venues 09Competition Venues The Olympic Park and the other Olympic venues will be at San Francisco and in the Bay Area. The San Francisco Bay Area offers the best competitive conditions for the 2024 Olympic Games and is the natural arena to host the Grand Olympic pageant. While San Francisco is the candidate city, the proposal for the Games is a regional effort. Venues stretch from San Pablo Reservoir in the East Bay for rowing to the San Jose Convention Centre for judo, wrestling and taekwondo but 13 of the 22 venues will be at San Francisco. All the Olympic Venues will be set with a wireless connection thanks to Cisco System’s partnership. In addition, SF2024 taking advantage the partnership with Google, will have a specific mobile application to help athletes and audience in moving and checking sport schedules and to find all the info about the Games. San Francisco want to apply the model used in London 2012. The Games were concentrated primarily in existing, temporary facilities. The idea is to contain costs in an era when the Olympic Games, particularly in Beijing 2008 and Sochi 2024, have often been marked by profligate public spending on facilities that sit vacant afterward. Of the 22 venues to be provided, 17 of the 22 are already built and some of them will be temporary; in development the new Arena for the NBA’s team Golden State Warriors in San Francisco’s Mission Bay, a multi – use indoor arena of 18.000 – seat that will be ready for the 2018 – 2019 NBA season. The arena project will be financed privately and it will host basketball and gymnastic during the Games. While the only permanent facilities planned to be built are a tennis centre and a BMX Park on Treasure Island and a canoe slalom course in San Pablo Bay. Linked to the Warriors Arena is the particular case of Piers 30 & 32, a 13 – acre concrete slab with gorgeous views of the Bay Bridge, chosen as the venue for the beach volleyball’s competition. The piers have been a graveyard for development proposals by six groups since 1993, most recently the Warriors, who this year wanted to build the new arena there. The project faced political and neighbourhood opposition and the piers would have needed $180 million in structural work. The Olympic Games can represent the solution to repair the piers for a lighter use such as volleyball and to turn it into a park afterward. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 21

  • 23. IV – Venues 10Olympic Stadium The Olympic Park will be located in the South Eastern portion of San Francisco, on an undeveloped stretch of open space between the hills of Brisbane and the abandoned hulk of Candlestick Park, known as the Brisbane Baylands, lies the heart of the Bay Area’s Olympic. A temporary stadium of 65,000 – to 70,000 seat will be built along Highway 101 in Brisbane and will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the track and field events. The investments for this “pop up” stadium projected to being the Olympic Stadium will be around $350 million. Different amenities in the area (aside from sporting venues) are meant to increase usability of the site and the amount of people entering area. The new Olympic Stadium would be down and its materials repurposed after the games have ended. The goal is try to minimize the cost of taxpayers by using existing venues and temporary venues such as the Brisbane stadium as much as possible. The Olympic Stadium of Brisbane San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 23

  • 25. IV – Venues 11Olympic Village The residential building masses are along the outskirts of the village to provide the athletes with privacy when training and when using the centralized public use areas. The centre courtyards of each building will allow to athletes to relax and enjoy their time at the San Francisco Olympic Village and to focus on their upcoming events. The Olympic Village will include training, commercial area as well as recreational facilities. How we can see in the figure 4, there are many facilities available to athletes, in this way they have all amenities within Olympic Village and they have not to go out e and to deal with the fans, tourist and the masses of journalist ready to have a statement or a scoop. The Olympic Village itself is not open to the public and can only be accessed by those with special privileges. The Olympic Village, where athletes stay during the games, will be at the old Hunters Point Shipyard in San Francisco’s Bayview neighbourhood. The Olympic Village construction will be financed by the private sector as part of a redevelopment project (The Hunters Point Redevelopment Plan). The area is undergoing major residential and commercial development in fact after the Games it will be a liveable neighbourhood for many people. During the Olympic Games, athletes, officials and trainers live in a dorm – style units. Between 17.500 and 18.000 people stay in the Olympic Village. Looking at the Olympic Village of the London Olympics, units for the San Francisco Olympics will also have an average of 5.45 people per unit. The result is that will be at least 3,303 units. In fact, the design contains 3,495 total units. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 25

As of September 2014, there were 33,642 hotel rooms in San Francisco and 215 hotels. On average, 2 people stay in each hotel room (“San Francisco Visitor”). With the different venues spread throughout the Bay Area, not all of the visitors will be staying in San Francisco. With other urban cities surrounding San Francisco, there will be enough hotels to support the influx of people to the area. The university campuses in the area can also serve as hotels. Different college campuses with student housing that could possibly be used during the Olympics are the University of California: Berkeley, University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, Sacramento State University, and University of California: Davis. We thought of using multiple cruises by the seaside in order to improve the number of rooms available during the Olympic time. San Francisco Hotel Guest Profile Overnight hotel guests account for more than two of every three dollars spent locally by out-of-town visitors despite representing only 1/3 of all visitors to the city (the balance stayed either in private homes with friends or relatives, stayed in hotels outside the city though San Francisco was their primary destination, or were day visitors from nearby areas). • Average annual household income: $118,000 • Average spending in SF (per person, per day): $240.31 • First-time San Francisco visitors: 27.2% • Traveling with children: 17.2% • Average age: 43 years old • Average nights in San Francisco hotels: 3.5 nights • People per room: 2.0 • Arrived by air: 69.2% San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 27

  • 29. V – Accomodation 13Media Accomodation / Tourism Visitors San Francisco hosted 16.9 million visitors in 2013, including hotel guests, those staying with friends and relatives, those staying in accommodations outside the city but whose primary destination was San Francisco, and regional visitors driving in for the day. Visitor spending reached the highest ever in 2013, with more than $9.38 billion spent in local businesses(up 2.3% from 2012). This means during an average day in San Francisco, 134,231 visitors are spending $25.7 million daily (including spending related to meetings and conventions). This massive injection of visitor dollars directly supports local hotels, restaurants, shops, attractions, and cultural institutions. It also indirectly boosts practically every segment of the city's economy and has a broad positive influence on government finances - some $607 million in tax and fee revenue flowed into the City and County of San Francisco in 2013, up 8.1% from the previous year. The Importance of Tourism According to Destination Analysts, Inc. San Francisco Resident Survey, the number of jobs supported by tourism rose 3.8% in 2013, totaling 76,834 jobs with an annual payroll of $2.31 billion (up 5.7% from 2012). In addition, 53% of residents believe tourism is San Francisco's most important industry, and 98% believe tourism is very important or important to the vitality of San Francisco's economy. 82% of residents disagree that "San Francisco has too many tourists" and 78% believe tourism makes San Francisco a better place to live. Media Accomodation For the accredited media we thought of creating a media village in the proximity of the Olympic venues. Ideally we would like ensure that media will be very close to each competition venue with a minimal journey time. A media shuttle bus service will be in operation around the clock in order to provide efficient and confortable access to all media working during the Olympic games. • 31. VI – Transport 14General Infrastructures San Francisco and the Bay Area have the benefit of having an adequate and extensive transportation system as well as three international airports located within the area. Our transports will allowed all visitors, athletes, staff and media to reach efficiency, quickly and safety all places of interest. • Transport must be safe and secure. • Transport must be “absolutely” reliable. • Transport must be efficient, comfortable, convivial and must guarantee short ravel time especially for athletes and the media. • Transport must be flexible to mitigate risk of interruptions. • Transport shall be environmentally friendly. • Transport shall contribute to a strong host city and regional mobility legacy. All necessary transportation is already in place to serve the needs of the 2024 Olympic Games in San Francisco Bay Area. Two additional projects that will enhance the spectator transportation system but also be useful to local population after the Olympic Games are the extension of BART along the East Bay to San Josè and the electrification of Caltrain. These two big projects will be accomplished according to the ecofriendly philosofy typical of SF 2024. The projects had already received approval from the voters and 80% of the costs of the projects are funded locally. San Francisco 2024 aligns perfectly with the direction of the IOC for the future Games, reying on existing public tranportation infrastructure for spectators in a compact but distributed venue plan that does not overload the systems. SJC airport provides a choice of ground transportation options and disabled facilities. Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART) and Amtrak stations are in close proximity to the San Jose International Airport. Oakland International Airport (OAK) Oakland International Airport (OAK) is located 12 miles (19 km) from Oakland, northern California, and serves around 15 million annual passengers to and from the San Francisco Bay Area metro region. Oakland Airport is one of three international airports in the San Francisco Bay area, and benefits from excellent transport links to Oakland and San Francisco. OAK is also the closest airport to the San Francisco financial district. Two big advantages of OAK are the high on-time arrival percentage, in 2009 OAK had the highest on-time arrival percentage among the 40 busiest North American airports and the extreme proximity of the parking. OAK offers an extensive choice of parking options cover valet, short and long term options with shuttle linking passengers to the terminal building. Oakland Airport is also amongst the top 30 airports for cargo volume in the world. The Oakland International Airport has a variety of transportation options available for travelers passing through its doors. These options include Taxis, Bus/Shuttle Services, and Public Bus Service. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) San Francisco International Airport is a world-class airport, linking international and domestic destinations, serving over 45 million passengers a year, with links throughout North America and around the world. Described as the ‘gateway to the Pacific’, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is one of the major entry and departure points for passengers coming from or going to Asia. It repeatedly ranks among the top 30 busiest airports worldwide and was the first major airport in the USA to fully automate an integrated baggage system. • 35. VI – Trasport 16Land transportation Caltrain Caltrain is a California commuter rail line on the San Francisco peninsula and in the Santa Clara Valley. The north end of the line is San Francisco, at 4th and King streets; its south end is Gilroy. Trains leave San Francisco and San Jose about hourly on weekdays, or more frequently during commute hours and for special events like the Summer Games. Caltrain will be improved as a electrification over all line. Street and Freeways The extensive freeway system running throughout the Bay Area allows for rapid movements of large groups of people. The grid-like layout of San Francisco also makes navigating the city relatively easy for tourists visiting the area. San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI) Muni is the primary transit operator within San Francisco. Its extensive network of bus, trolleybus, streetcar, and cable car lines serve every tourist destination, shopping district, and residential neighborhood located within the City limits. SF Muni operates approximately 80 routes with stops within 2 blocks of 90% of all residences in the city. The venues chosen for San Francisco will be all accessible by Muni and within walking distance from Muni lines. Ferries The ferry routes throughout the San Francisco Bay will cross the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. This will allow for another means of transportation for those trying to reach the host city or venues. The ferry ports in San Francisco are located near Muni stops, allowing for enabling easier circulation around San Francisco. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) BART is the primary regional transit operator in the Bay Area. Its extensive train network connects San Francisco with Peninsula Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont, Walnut Creek, Dublin/Pleasanton and other cities in the East Bay; also it connects both area airports SFO (via direct train service) and OAK (via an "AirBART" bus connection). It connects the San Francisco Peninsula with For more than 40 years BART has provided fast, reliable transportation to downtown offices, shopping centers, tourist attractions, entertainment venues, universities and other destinations for Bay Area residents and visitors alike. There’s already a project to extend the line to San José. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 35

  • 39. Ultimate Responsibility for Security The Superintendent-General of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), one of the world’s largest police forces, will have ultimate responsibility for security in San Francisco during the Olympic Games. This responsibility applies at all stages, through planning to preparation and implementation of security at Games-time. Furthermore, the Superintendent-General will be responsible for coordination with Crime Prevention Company, SWAT team and through the Agency, with other prefectural police forces for events outside San Francisco and for coordination with security and intelligence agencies which will provide integrated support. In addition, highly specialised vehicles and equipment, such as vehicles equipped with explosive countermeasure devices, marine vessels, helicopters, and surveillance cameras, will be used to respond to any crime or disaster with prompt mobility. In close collaboration with the police, the director of the OCOG security will ensure that there is a full understanding of Olympic requirements of security and will liaise with the security-related organisations in the planning and operation. Based on the analysis of security requirements from past Olympic Games as well as current technological trends, security equipment with the world’s highest standards will be installed at the venues during the Olympic Games. Security cameras will have proven, cutting-edge American image analysing technologies and intrusion alarms, and the ID cards and accreditation system will be equipped with the latest technologies. Thorough security systems were successfully set up in recent major international sports events, including the 1996 Atlanta City Olympic Games and the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games, as well as the summit meetings hosted in United States. Taking full advantage of the knowledge and experience gained in the past, the responsible organisations will do everything within their power to assure a safe environment and operation. The command and control of the police force in all the prefectures lie with the SFPD. Furthermore, the accountability is quite clear in the case of a national security crisis, such as a large-scale terrorist attack, which must engage the agencies and response capabilities of the National Government. Under laws and under well-established procedures for managing such situations, the Prime Minister of United States assumes ultimate responsibility. Under his leadership, the relevant government authorities including the Cabinet Secretariat; the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport; the Ministry of Justice; and the Ministry of Defence collaborate through a system that is capable of responding to such crises. Security Resources Securing the number of personnel at a level equivalent to the requirements of past Olympic Games is well within the capacity of the present forces. The SFPD is responsible for the resources throughout the city and is to be seconded from other prefectural police forces if necessary. Private security firms may be used to provide the security resources within the venues. Consistent with common practice at Olympic Games, volunteers will be used for many “soft security” functions, such as ticket checking. During the Games, police personnel will be positioned with priority given to the Olympic-related venues. VII – Security 18Resourses and chain of command San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 39

  • 43. VII – General conditions, public opinion and experience 20Environmental Mindset San Francisco 2024 has adopted a unique approach to organizing the management of the Olympic Games minimizing the environment risk bu placing environmental management at the core of the management philosophy and operations plan. The depth of the environmental commitment in San Francisco 2024’s plan will be recognized as a new standard of sustainable excellence for global multi- sport events within the worldwide community of experts who understand the impact of sports on the environment. Venues The Energy Center is a crucial aspect to every Olympic Games. The Energy Center will aid in powering the Olympic Village as well as sporting venues of the Games. It also encouraged that most of the energy used on site be from renewable sources like wind, solar, hydro, geothermal taking advantage of the physical characteristic of the San Francisco Bay Area. In fact the city of San Francisco has developed a number of innovative policies and programs to move the city toward its goal of 100% renewable energy to become a cleaner, healthier and more sustainability city. In addition to the use of the renewable sources most of the area around Olympic Village is characterized of natural vegetation and greenery and the Hunters Point Redevelopment Plan works to improve the amount and the quality of green spaces in the area. Parks There are more than 220 parks maintained by the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department. The largest and best-known city park is Golden Gate Park, which stretches from the center of the city west to the Pacific Ocean. Transports In order to be considered a “green” city we have already start a big conversion of transports that is powered by renewable energy sources like solar, wind, electricity and biofuels. Green Connections aims to increase access to parks, open spaces, and the waterfront by envisioning a network of ‘green connectors’ – city streets that will be upgraded incrementally over the next 20 years to make it safer and more pleasant to travel to parks by walking, biking, and other forms of active transportation. The project aims to make the City more healthy, sustainable, and livable through features such as pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, street trees and other landscaping, stormwater management, and opportunities for beautification, public art, and community stewardship. We estimate that 12% of all spectators will use bicycle and electric bicycle to reach venues, San Francisco has a system of bike paths efficient and branched all over the city. We will provide electric bicycle at all park-n- ride locations to give spectators the opportunity to ride to the venue rather than board a shuttle bus. The venues will feature secure bicycle parking, a system that has proven very successful a most major events in SF. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 43

  • 45. VII – General conditions, public opinion and experience 21Public Opinion General Public Opinion The last Olympic Games in USA was Atlanta 1996. After 30 years, San Francisco is the US city candidate to host Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. We are sure that every US citizen is supporting us to reach this goal. Americans are proudly part of USA, sincerely nationalists supporting every international events, because they think the United States of America is the best country in the world. The SF2024 Olympic Bid is the first international main sport event for San Francisco and the surrounding cities, so we estimate a strong public opinion supporting our decision. It’s time for this area to have a global attention improving and sharing our image in the world. Citizens in this area have the best quality of life in the US improving years by years, they are concerning about environmental, green economy, private rights, different and various events, Hi-Tech businesses and tourism. Also, San Francisco is commonly recognized as one of the most famous Capitol in the world for its long history and for having an Europe charm. We aim to be the best choice among the other cities running for the Olympic bid 2024. Opposition Part of the public opinion in San Francisco is worried about public funds to cover the costs. To reassure those citizens we plan Olympic Games totally financed by private investments, asking sponsorship to several hi-tech industries in our territory and designing the Olympic Village to leave as legacy private and commercial buildings. We want to follow the Barcelona and Sydney experience regarding Olympic Games low cost and high image return. There are many reasons why USA is the best choice for the Olympic Games 2024: it’s the first economy in the world; one of the countries with the highest ethnic diversity, product of large-scale immigration from every continents; first country in the medal all-time at the Summer Olympic Games, with medals won in 2321; a country that has already organized eight editions of the Olympic Games since 1986; a strong mentality in dramatization of the events; the “American Dream”, the idea that with hard work, courage and self-determination a person can earn a better life. As shown USA has powerful values in according with the Olympics games’ ones. Olympics Games in “San Francisco Bay Area” We argue that SF2024 could be a great opportunity not only for San Francisco City, but also for the whole San Francisco Bay Area, in which there will locate part of the Olympics Games. In this way, the organization will be split in different areas including main cities like Oakland, Berkeley, San José, Stockton, Fremont, Santa Rosa, Santa Clara. Indeed, the project concerning not only a single city, but a spread zone “The San Francisco Bay Area”, in order to create a big community hosting the Olympics Games and to divide the costs structures. • 47. VII – General conditions, public opinion and experience 22Experience Sports and past events San Francisco has got a long tradition in regards to culture and sport events. There are seven major league sports franchises in the San Francisco Bay Area, like 2 teams of Footbal (Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers), 2 team of Baseball (Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants), basketball (Golden State Warriors), hockey (San José Sharks) and soccer (San José Earthquakes); most of them were found in ’60. Every year since 1912 there’s the Bay to Breakers footrace, which is the best known for colourful costumes and a celebratory community spirit. The San Francisco Marathon counts more than 21.000 participants and the Triathlon Challenge, named “Escape from Alcatraz”, attracts 2000 top professional and amateur athletes every years. The Olympic Club, founded in 1860, is the oldest athletic club in the United States. Regarding golf, San Francisco has hosted the US Open on five occasions and also the public Harding Park Golf Course is an occasional stop on the PGA Tour. San Francisco hosted the 2013 America's Cup yacht racing competition. Stanford and Berkeley, the two majors university in California, are helding on yearly bases some of the most important college championship. San Francisco 2024–A bridge between nations 47

  • 49. VII – General conditions, public opinion and experience 23Meteorology The climate of San Francisco Bay Area The sharp topography and maritime surroundings of San Francisco combine with the unique California climate to produce a number of extremely varied microclimates within its 46 square miles. California's location in the middle latitudes and on the west coast of the North American continent, places it in the relatively rare Mediterranean type climate. The only other regions of the earth sharing this climate type are the southwestern tip of Africa, the west coast of Chile, the west coast of Australia, and of course, the region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea (Critchfield, 1966). This type of climate type is generally characterized by moist mild winters and dry summers.
