1. 2019 marks the 25th
anniversary of the Genocide
against the Tutsi in Rwanda, one of the darkest
chapters in human history. More than 800,000 people
– overwhelmingly Tutsi, but moderate Hutu, Twa and
many others who against the genocide – were
methodically killed in less than three months.
Since the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, the
United Nations has been a vital partner in the
restoration of Rwanda. In 2008, Rwanda was chosen
alongside seven other countries to implement a new
UN strategy called “Delivering as One” or” One UN”.
Together, the eight countries (Rwanda, Albania, Cape
Verde, Mozambique, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uruguay
and Viet Nam) have signed up to “Delivering as One”
agreeing to work within the UN system, taking
advantage of the strengths and comparative benefits
of the different UN agencies. The countries are
experimenting with ways to increase the UN system's
impact through more coherent programmes, reduced
transaction costs for governments, and lower
overhead costs for the UN system.
