SleepRate was established in 2006 by Dr. Anda Baharav, an MD, researcher and
sleep expert. Dr. Baharav spent years researching the connection between heart
rate and sleep at Tel Aviv University. When she discovered that changes in heart
rate directly correlate with various sleep stages during the night, she decided to
take this discovery and turn it into a service, and so SleepRate was born.
While SleepRate was established as a medical device company, the increasing
penetration of smartphones and wearable devices opened up new opportunities
to bring the SleepRate solution to many more people around the world and so
the company pivoted in 2011 to better serve the consumer market. Over 23,000
people in the U.S. and Europe – including hundreds of elite athletes - have
downloaded and use the SleepRate solution. The company has 16 full-time
employees.

Problem: Almost 50% of the populations of the U.S., Europe, and China –
around 2 billion people - suffer from sleep deficit and sleep disorders. That’s
close to 1 billion people! But for the majority of them, medical sleep clinics
are too time-consuming, expensive, inaccessible, intimidating, and often not
even relevant. But only 20% of those people have medically-related sleep
disorders that actually require a medical sleep lab to address their problem. The
remaining 80% of people with behavioral sleep disorders who don’t need sleep
clinic services, as well as those with sleep deficit, rely instead on apps and
sleep monitoring devices despite their not being sufficiently accurate, effective,
or comprehensive.
What we do
Solution: SleepRate fills the vacuum where there is currently no non-medical, at-
home solution that enables sleep monitoring, assessment and therapy - all-in-1
- in the comfort and convenience of the user’s home. The SleepRate app works
alone or, for more detailed analysis, in combination with a wide range of motion
and heart rate tracking devices. It first monitors and analyzes the person’s
sleep, and then provides a custom-tailored sleep improvement plan with simple
step-by-step guidance to reach appropriate sleep goals. SleepRate helps people
learn to sleep better by falling asleep faster, waking up fewer times during the
night, and getting the right amount of sleep. The end result? Wake up feeling
more refreshed and energized!
Dr. Baharav gained her expertise in
sleep medicine as a researcher at the
Medical Physics Department at Tel Aviv
University, and has more than 20 years
working as an Attending Physician
at many prestigious medical centers.
She is published regularly in medical
journals, with over 25 publications in
the field, and holds patents for her
sleep research. She received her B.Sc in
Physics at the Sackler School of Physics
and Astronomy, and M.D. at Tel Aviv
University.
Dr. Eyal leads all sleep-related algorithm
development and regulatory compliance
for SleepRate. She brings a multi-
disciplinary approach based on medical,
physical, optical and signal processing
knowledge. She has experience in
planning, executing and analyzing
physical and biomedical studies and
has extensive knowledge of non-linear
dynamics. Dr. Eyal obtained her M.Sc
and Ph.D. degrees in medical physics
from Tel Aviv University.
SleepRate’s unique technology determines sleep quality and quantity based on
the relationship between heart beats and the brains’ controlling mechanisms.
It then creates the sleep therapy plan based on clinically validated, exclusively
licensed sleep protocols developed at Stanford University. Future versions
already under development will also take into account the user’s mood,
personality, and location, to create an even more personalized all-in-1 solution.
