Srhr session outline alumni day sept3
1. Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the wake of Post-2015
Moderator: Dinu Abdella | Session Room: Duijfhuiszaal | 15:30 - 16:30
So, why not join us in this session to discuss and reflect on the past, present & future of SRHR in the context of international
development? Let’s gather around to share our experiences and concerns. What do the SDG's and related transformations
mean for SRHR as a (controversial) topic and in development policy and practice? How are the SDG's different from the MDG's
in respect to SRHR? What (new) opportunities and obstacles does it bring for SRHR? How is the increasingly globalised and
interconnected world in the wake of post-2015 (still) relevant for SRHR?
Our guests want to meet you
Lambert Grijns is Director of the Social Development Department and Special Ambassador for Sexual and
Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) & HIV/AIDS at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.
He is a member of the High-Level Task Force for the International Conference on Population and
Development (ICPD) (Lambert.Grijns@minbuza.nl).
Talk focus: How did we get here? A look into past trends (1994/ICPD – MDGs) incl. demogrphic changes.
How SDGs are (still & newly) relevant for SHRH? What are the major global issues and challenges to
focus on moving forward in the (new) development thinking and agenda? What does it mean for
different actors ? (What could it mean for 'you'?)
Martin Ayanore is a trained community health and development specialist with knowledge on international
development theory and practice across West Africa. Currently a doctoral researcher with the department of
health services research at Maastricht University. His research focuses on unmet reproductive and maternity
care needs across developing countries with a focus in Ghana (m.ayanore@maastrichtuniversity.nl).
Talk focus: What are the main SRH issues in Sub-Saharan Africa, incl demographic inequality and
unmeet issues on SRH? What are the MDGs and SDGs consensus on this? How can national policies
help address that, incl. matters on financing for SDGs and actors invovled?
Lotte Dijkstra, is the UN-Youth Ambassador for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights
(lotte@yasrhr.com).
Talk focus: Youth SRHR has been left behind in the MDG's. The SRHR youth movement has been
very active in the post-2015 process, hoping to fill this gap. Although many issues, like Civil Society
Englagment are also not in the SDG's , having meaningful youth participation and youth led
accountability in the implementation can make the SDG's an opportunity for youth SRHR.
Jeanette Slootbeek, is a feminisit activist and international consultant on SRHR, and Treasurer Board
Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights. She creates new projects with passion and leadership.
With enthusiasm she connects people and in complex political and administrative situations she knows
how to move things forwards (j.slootbeek@wxs.nl).
Talk focus: SDGs strive to build on a human rights framework. How does this relate to the
SRH agend? Why is this a useful framework to address issues like our sexuality? Using examples
from grassroots women's organisations and what happening on the ground, how does that relate
or translate for the new sustainable development agenda? Specific attention will made on access
to safe and legal abortion.
