2. INTRODUCTION :
• The name Bihar is derived from
the Sanskrit and Pali word, Vihara (Devanagari:
विहार), which means "abode“.
• The ancient name of Bihar is “Magadha”.
• It is the 12th largest state in terms of geographical
size at 98,940 km2 and 3rd largest by population
• State bird : Sparrow
• State flower: Kanchanar (Bauhinia acuminata)

3. HISTORY :
• The Mauryan empire, which originated from
Magadha in 325 BC, was started
by Chandragupta Maurya and had its capital
at Pataliputra (modern Patna).
• During the British India, Bihar was a part of
the Presidency of Bengal, and was governed
from Calcutta.
4. LOCATION:
• It is bounded by Uttar Pradesh to its
west, Nepal to the north, Northern part
of West Bengal to the east and
by Jharkhand to the south.
• The Bihar plain is divided into two parts by the
river Ganges which flows through the middle
from west to east.
