ABOUT BIHAR

INTRODUCTION :
• The name Bihar is derived from
the Sanskrit and Pali word, Vihara (Devanagari:
विहार), which means "abode“.
• The ancient name of Bihar is “Magadha”.
• It is the 12th largest state in terms of geographical
size at 98,940 km2 and 3rd largest by population
• State bird : Sparrow
• State flower: Kanchanar (Bauhinia acuminata)
• State tree : Peepal
HISTORY :
• The Mauryan empire, which originated from
Magadha in 325 BC, was started
by Chandragupta Maurya and had its capital
at Pataliputra (modern Patna).
• During the British India, Bihar was a part of
the Presidency of Bengal, and was governed
from Calcutta.
LOCATION:
• It is bounded by Uttar Pradesh to its
west, Nepal to the north, Northern part
of West Bengal to the east and
by Jharkhand to the south.
• The Bihar plain is divided into two parts by the
river Ganges which flows through the middle
from west to east.
Climate:
• Bihar has a diverse climate.
• Its temperature is subtropical in general, with
hot summers and cool winters.
• Avg. Number of Rainy Days:52.5 Days in a Year
• Normal Rainfall:1,205 mm

• Population :10,38,04,637
• SEX Ratio (Females/Thousand Males): 916
• Highest Ratio(Gopalganj) : 1,015
• Lowest Ratio(Munger and Bhagalpur) : 879

• Highest Literacy Rate-Rohtas: 75.59%
• Lowest Literacy Rate-Purnia : 52.49%

Economy of Bihar:
• Gross state domestic product of Bihar for the
year 2011/2012 has been around
2622.30 billion INR.
• Agriculture = 22%
• Industry = 5%
• Services = 73%.
• The industrial sector contributes about 5% to
the GDP of Bihar, while the share of industrial
sector in India's GDP is around 20%
Tourism in Bihar:
• Bihar is one of the oldest inhabited places in
the world, with a history spanning 3,000
years.
• Bihar is visited by many tourists from around
the world, with about 24 milliontourists
visiting the state each year.
• Remains of the ancient city of Vaishali.
