a) The project was meant to reveal various aspects of Post-
Independence India through a merger of documentary/non-fiction
images captured by Films Division with images from popular Hindi
cinema.
b) Through this collision, of film in both, non-fiction and fiction format, a
new kind of narrative, based on film history creating socio-political
history of contemporary India was evolved.
c) The project involved extensive research in National film archives
and historicaldata available in libraries.
d) Political events of this period were covered through the cinematic
journey of those times; visited the archives in Pune, Delhi,
Lucknow- analyzed and watched over 3000 films.
I am an Encyclopedia of Hindi films released from 1950s till 1990s
through avid viewing and re-viewing!
Assisted and worked with Muzaffar Ali on a film titled `Daaman’.
Directed “Bihar ki Kahani”, a short film on Bihar.
Directed `Ganga YamuniTehzeeb”, a film on India’s composite
culture.

War of Civilizations: 1857 A.D, 2008- it is a 2 volume, 2000 page
work that covers India and its regional uprisings. It is the only book by
an Indian and from an Indian perspective on the subject since 1950. It
has unearthed, revealed, and questioned various theories that have
been prevalent about the subject. It has won several awards and
recognitions.
It was applauded by ‘London Guardian’ and University of Edinburgh as
extraordinary work on the subject.

The non-fiction book is the first full length, historical and contemporary
narrative, covering a time span of more than 250 years, from 1722 to
the present, of Indian subcontinent’s most fascinating city culture.

money making, sensation, `ada’, `zaban’, honor and culture as
authentic Indianness—as opposed to Hindutva, Jinnah’s two nation

A hard-boiled, fast paced narrative about sexual and political corruption in
contemporary India; an erotic thriller set against the backdrop of caste

ambition and wealth.The novel was in India’s top ten for three months;

Mangal Pandey: True Story of an Indian Revolutionary
Published in August 2005 by Rupa, this non-fiction book was hailed as a
true account of Mangal Pandey’’s life; pitted against the Ketan Mehta film,
it was seen as more authentic—it sold more than 10,000 copies, a record
of sorts.

Former Member of the Governing Council of ICSSR – Indian
Council for Social Science Research. It is India’s premier body in
