Your home is your place of refuge, a place where children are born, families
are raised, friends and family entertained, memories made... But to a
stranger seeing your house for the first time, would they see instead the
evidence left behind by artists in training, past giggly food fights, potty
training experiments and cats having climbed the walls?
When life happens and you have to leave home behind to make a new home
in a new place, it is sometimes hard to put sentimentality aside. How many
countless hours did you spend deciding on that perfect shade of chartreuse
for the living room? The color that matches perfectly with the ottoman and
the beautiful crocheted throw your grandmother made you?
When staging a home to sell, most realtors will tell you to minimize personal
effects. Family photographs, name letters, even any religious decor should
be hidden out of sight. A potential buyer does best with a clean slate, no
clothes, no clutter to distract them from envisioning themselves in their new
space... your old home.
This means there is a certain amount of prep-work involved in getting your
home ready to market. Painting the walls to erase signs of junior's three inch
growth spurt last year may be painful, but necessary. Choose a neutral color,
buyers that have a distaste for green (and who don't have a matching
ottoman and throw blanket from grandma!) may not appreciate the
chartreuse. The last thing you want is a buyer to groan at the thought of
having to repaint to a color that more satisfies their lifestyle. As difficult as it
may seem, there is a reason most rental units are painted "navaho white".
The color's easy neutrality appeals to a wider audience, and is not viewed as
quite so overwhelming, even if the buyers do believe they'll have to paint
again. Neutrals are best!
Don't forget, you'll be in the same position when you are looking for that new
place to call home. A Tangerine kitchen might appeal to some, but if you
favor earth tones, it'll be so much easier to imagine yourself hosting a dinner
party in a room that speaks directly to you.
