The ASPCA was founded in New York in 1866 by Henry Bergh as the first organization in the United States devoted to preventing cruelty to animals. It has animal abuse officers with the same authority as police officers and operates around 5,000 animal shelters nationwide that care for 5-7 million animals per year. Donations to local ASPCA shelters help provide for animal needs and keep shelters clean and healthy environments as the organization works to care for abandoned and abused animals by sheltering and feeding them until adoption.
