Sequencing the genomes of Earth's biodiversity is urgently needed to understand life and preserve species. While genome sequencing has provided insights, less than 1% of estimated species have had their genomes sequenced. Initiatives aim to sequence genomes from 1.5 million eukaryotic species over 10 years to facilitate conservation efforts as human impacts threaten many species with extinction. Genome data can be used to identify new species, understand relationships between organisms, and potentially restore extinct species.
