Food prices are expected to continue increasing in 2016 due to high energy prices, overpopulation, and a declining Canadian dollar. The average Canadian household spent an additional $325 on food in 2015 and should expect costs to rise by another $345 in 2016. The world population is projected to grow by 1 billion people within the next 12 years, putting pressure on global food, water, and job resources as population growth will be most rapid in the least developed countries. Potential solutions include supporting local food production, distributing food more fairly, reducing food waste, using science and technology to boost yields, and passing legislation to better manage food systems.
4. FOOD PRICES
If a trip to the grocery store seems expensive now,
just wait till 2016.
Executives from grocery chains have warned
there's no immediate relief in sight from increased
food costs and a sinking loonie that have led to
higher prices, and researchers suggest
consumers will have to deal with more sticker
shock in the year ahead.
The University of Guelph's Food Institute
estimates the average Canadian household spent
an additional $325 on food this year. On top of
that, consumers should expect an additional
annual increase of about $345 in 2016.
5. OVERPOPULATION
World population is expected to grow another
1 billion in just 12 years, creating
unprecedented demand for food, water,
energy, and employment. Population growth is
expected to be most rapid in the 49 least
developed countries, which will double the size
from around 900 million today to 1.8 billion in
2050. There were only1 billion humans in
1804; 2 billion in 1927; 6 billion in 1999; and
7.2 billion by 2013. UN forecasts a range from
8.3 billion to 10.9 billion people by 2050, with
9.6 billion as the mid-projection.
6. Solutions of those problems
Buy locally produced food
Distribution of food fairly
Stop wasting food
Science & Technology (allow science to help
with food production< genetically modified
food
Government regulation legislation passing
laws which helps manage food production
&consumption!!!!
