Kindle books – an introduction
A. An	Amazon	account	manages	book	ownership.	
a. You	need	an	Amazon	account	to	own	a	Kindle	book	–	registration	is	free	and	
simple	–	there	is	no	purchase	obligation.	
b. If	you	lose	a	device,	you	have	not	lost	any	books	–	your	Amazon	account	
maintains	your	Kindle	library	within	the	cloud.		
B. Read	your	Kindle	books	in	a	browser…	or	with	an	app…	or	using	a	Kindle	device.	
a. Kindle	Cloud	Reader	lets	you	read	Kindle	books	with	Chrome	or	Firefox	or	
Safari	running	on	any	device.	No	software	needs	to	be	installed.	You	have	the	
option	to	cache	a	book	for	offline	reading.	
b. The	free	Kindle	App	is	available	for	Android,	Blackberry,	iOS,	Mac	and	
Windows.	You	can	read	books	on	your	smartphone,	tablet,	laptop	or	desktop	
computer.	A	smartphone	with	a	five-inch	screen	works	fine.	A	tablet	in	
portrait	mode	reads	like	a	magazine.	Your	computer	will	work	as	well.	
c. A	Kindle	device	like	the	Paperwhite	is	compact,	intuitive,	easy	on	the	eyes,	
has	great	battery	life.	Not	the	first	choice	if	a	book,	like	this	one,	has	website	
links.	In	that	case,	using	Kindle	Cloud	Reader	or	the	Kindle	App	works	better.	
C. Keep	your	Kindle	books	on	your	smartphone…	and	your	tablet…	and	your	laptop.	
a. You	can	read	your	Kindle	books	on	as	many	as	six	devices.	There’s	an	online	
tool	for	adding	or	deleting	devices.	
b. You	can	add	bookmarks,	highlight	text	and	take	notes	within	a	book.	When	
you	open	a	book	on	another	device,	it	puts	you	right	where	you	left	off.	Your	
bookmarks,	highlights	and	notes	sync	between	devices.
