The document discusses the Service Learning program at the International School of Dakar (ISD) which began in 2008/2009. It focuses on three main partnerships: Samusocial, a shelter for street children; Medina Orphanage; and Kër Yaayu Xaleyi, a sister school in Pikine. Students from ISD visit these organizations regularly to spend time with and provide support to children. The goals for the upcoming school year are to continue these existing partnerships and look for new service opportunities within the local community.
4. Why are we doing Service Learning?
Because we want to:
promote learning through active
participation and extend learning beyond
the classroom
Provide opportunities to use skills and
knowledge in real-life situations
Develop a sense of caring for others
Provide structured time for the students to
reflect
6. SAMUSOCIAL
Samusocial Senegal is based in Dakar for almost nine
years. It provides shelter, medical care and
education services to street children.
The center is open round the clock, seven days a
week. A permanent infirmary keeps the children
needing constant medical observation.
ISD has developed a strong relationship between the
boys at the shelter and ISD high school students over
the past four years.
High School students go every week to the Samusocial
shelter. Several times a year, we invite the children to
come to ISD for fun games and sports, in order to give
them and our students the experience of recognizing
each other as human beings.
7. MEDINA ORPHANAGE « La pouponnière »
From August 1995 La Pouponnière has been hosting kids
aged 0-2 (prematurely born or the mother needs
medical care)
La Pouponnière also receives abandoned children with
the coordination of Dakar regional court.
ISD’s collaboration with La Pouponnière started way
before the actual service learning.
Today ISD’s students go to the orphanage once a week
and spend two hours taking care of the babies.
8. KËR YAaYU XALEYI
Our sister school in Pikine, "Kër Yaayu Xaleyi" (The
house of the children’s mother"), is our most long-
lasting service project.
The school is located in Pikine, one of the most
populated and poorest suburbs of Dakar
Last year ISD organized school visits, invited a couple of
classes to visit ISD. It also had fundraising activities to
buy educational material
This year the PTO (Teacher-Parent Organization) offered
to build a library and an additional room which will serve
as a classroom and/or for other purposes.
9. Closer to home
Students at ISD are welcomed (and encouraged) to explore
other ways to contribute to their local community and many
students do provide their service to other organizations. In
doing so, they are usually needed in:
Local Conferences
PTA Activities
Sports Events
Haunted House
Jappale activities
PTO activities
10. Service Learning Coordinator
Explores opportunities for student service experiences
Serves as a liaison between local communities and
faculty by establishing and maintaining contact with
community leaders
works with teachers to integrate the idea and practice of
service to the community into the school culture.
11. Goals for SY 2012/2013
Carry on students’ visits at Samusocial, the orphanage
and Pikine school
Organize fundraising activities to buy food for the
orphanage
Continue English classes with the maintenance staff
Explore new areas if possible
