➢ Whether it is tomato soup that you love or creamy butter chicken, be
prepared to have your pockets lightened considerably. The price of
tomatoes in Delhi's retail market has skyrocketed to Rs 100 per kg and
there is no respite expected for at least another two weeks. A strike called
by various associations of the Azadpur mandi on Friday may lead to a
further spike in prices. Tomato vendors at the mandi have been sitting on
protest against unauthorised occupation of their sheds for the past five days
and are demanding the sacking of the agricultural produce marketing
committee's secretary. “There is a massive shortage of tomatoes in the
country due to heavy rain in several areas. On Monday , the Azadpur
market received about 20% of its daily demand with a little less than 200
tonnes arriving from Himachal Pradesh. We don't see the situation
improving in the near future,“ said Anil Malhotra, general secretary of
Azadpur vegetable traders' body.
➢ The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to apprise it by July 28 about
any adverse impact, based on research, of the commercial release of
genetically modified (GM) mustard crop. A bench comprising Chief
Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud said that if the
commercial roll out of the GM mustard crop has adverse impact, then the
government would have to take a "well-informed" view before coming out
with a policy decision on it. The bench considered the submission of
lawyer Prashant Bhushan that the genetically modified seeds might have
adverse effects leading diseases like cancer and said that it that was so, then
it might restrain the government. "You (counsel for the Centre) will have
to give an undertaking on the effects of the GM mustard crop. If it is going
to have an (adverse) impact, then we will have to take a decision," it
said. Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre,
said the government has so far not taken any policy decision on the
commercial release of the GM mustard crop and was considering various
aspects including the data. The court posted the matter for further hearing
to July 31.
➢ Jeera futures edged down on NCDEX on muted demand from
retailers and stockists at the spot market. However, tight supplies from
the producing regions capped some losses. The contract for August
delivery was trading at Rs 19205.00, down by 0.23% or Rs 45.00 from
its previous closing of Rs 19250.00. The open interest of the contract
stood at 12996 lots. The contract for September delivery was trading at
Rs 19340.00, down by 0.05% or Rs 10.00 from its previous closing of
Rs 19350.00. The open interest of the contract stood at 4098 lots on
NCDEX.
➢ Turmeric futures edged lower on NCDEX due to fall in demand at
the spot market. Further, good sowing progress and monsoon rains in
Telangana and Karnataka too fuelled the downtrend. The contract for
August delivery was trading at Rs 6908.00, down by 3.65% or Rs
262.00 from its previous closing of Rs 7170.00. The open interest of
the contract stood at 12250 lots. The contract for September delivery
was trading at Rs 7010.00, down by 3.60% or Rs 262.00 from its
previous closing of Rs 7272.00. The open interest of the contract stood
at 3885 lots on NCDEX.
➢ Soybean futures traded marginally higher on NCDEX as speculators
enlarged their positions on reports of lower sowing compared to last
year. Further, expectation of good crushing demand on reports of hike
in import duty too supported soybean prices. Meanwhile, US soybeans
rose after the US Department of Agriculture said more of the crop had
been damaged by recent dry weather than expected. However,
expectation of revival of monsoon in central India, capped some gains.
The contract for August delivery was trading at Rs 3021.00, up by
0.97% or Rs 29.00 from its previous closing of Rs 2992.00. The open
interest of the contract stood at 66280 lots.
