Indian players are ecstatic after their win over Pakistan in the semifinal of the 2011 World Cup in Mohali. File photo
When India takes on Pakistan, it’s not a mere rivalry that you get when Real Madrid takes on
Barcelona, but a contest that gives a whole new meaning to the word ‘rivalry’.
On Sunday, the two subcontinent heavyweights go head to head in what will certainly be a
mouth-watering contest at the Adelaide Oval in their bid to win cricket’s most prestigious trophy.
Stats in the World Cup are completely against Pakistan as they’ve lost to India in all their five
World Cup games, most recently, the semifinal of the 2011 competition as the Men in Blue went
on to win their second World Cup.
However, stats mean nothing at the end of the day and if India continues to play the way they
have during the tour of Australia, they will truly struggle to find any sort of momentum.

3. The “we won't give it back” campaign to get everyone in India prepared for the World Cup seems
to have done a good job and the players must respond by defending their title.
M. S. Dhoni is yet to figure out his best team composition as he looks for his first win since India
trumped Sri Lanka before the team’s disastrous tour of Australia.
Rohit Sharma’s return is a major boost to the side, without him, the top order looks lost. Shikhar
Dhawan’s failures with the bat is a major concern for the side and it will be interesting to see if
he retains his place for this crunch game.
Another worry for India is Virat Kohli’s form. After an ever-impressive Test Series against
Australia, he’s really struggled in the shorter format, which is rather unusual for someone like
him. However, this game is the perfect opportunity for him to get back amongst the runs and
kick-start India’s World Cup bid.
Pakistan have problems of their own with key players such as Mohammed Hafeez and Saeed
Ajmal being ruled out of the tournament which is a major blow to the side.
They will heavily rely on the experience of Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan to
help them get out this relatively straightforward group, but as we’ve witnessed in the World Cup,
surprises and shocks are just around the corner.
Big things are however expected of Ahmed Shehzed and Umar Akmal, certainly the future of
Pakistan cricket and both will have a point to make at this year’s competition. During last year’s
Twenty20 World Cup, both of them enjoyed great success with the bat and must pull their
weight among cricket’s heavyweights.
In surely the biggest game of the tournament, the two subcontinent giants will provide a grand
spectacle for viewers all around the world. This game means everything not just for the players,
but for the fans as well. Sunday morning couldn’t roll over quick enough.
