1. Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
The number of children who would be born per woman (or per 1,000 women) if she/they
were to pass through the childbearing years bearing children according to a current
schedule of age-specific fertility rates.
Yearly number of live births per 1000 women of reproductive age, usually 15-44yrs or
15-49 yrs.
ASFR = Births in year to women aged X X 1,000
No. of women aged X at mid-year population
2. Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR)
Percent of women of reproductive age (15-49) who are using (or whose partner is using)
a contraceptive method at a particular point in time, almost always reported for women
married or in sexual union.
Numerator: Number of women of reproductive age at risk of pregnancy who are using
(or whose partner is using) a contraceptive method at a given point in time.
Denominator: Number of women of reproductive age at risk of pregnancy at the same
point in time
3. Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR)
Annual number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births: Numerator: All maternal
deaths occurring in a period (usually a year). Denominator: Total number of live births
occurring in the same period
= No of maternal deaths in a year X 100,000
No. of live births
Maternal Mortality Rate = Number of maternal deaths in a year per 100,000 women of
reproductive age in that year
= No. of Maternal Deaths in 1-year x 100,000

4. Antenatal Care Coverage
Percent of women attended at least once during pregnancy, by skilled health personnel
(excluding trained or untrained traditional birth attendants), for reasons relating to
pregnancy.
Numerator: Number of pregnant women attended, at least once during their pregnancy,
by skilled personnel for reasons related to pregnancy during a fixed period.
Denominator: Total number of live births during the same period
5. Percent of Births Attended by Skilled Health Personnel
Percent of births attended by skilled health personnel (excluding trained or untrained
traditional birth attendants)
Numerator: Births attended by skilled health personnel during a specified period
Denominator: Total number of live births during the specified period
6. Availability of Basic Essential Obstetric Care
Number of facilities with functioning basic essential obstetric care per 500,000
population

9. Low Birth Weight Prevalence
Percent of live births that weigh less than 2,500g
Numerator: Number of liveborn babies who weigh less than 2500 g x 100
Denominator: Total number of live births
10. Positive Syphilis Serology Prevalence in Pregnant Women
Percent of pregnant women (15-24) attending antenatal clinics, whose blood has been
screened for syphilis, with positive serology for syphilis
Numerator: Number of pregnant women aged 15–24 years attending antenatal clinics,
whose blood has been screened for syphilis, with a positive serology for syphilis during a
specified period x 100
Denominator: Total number of pregnant women aged 15–24 years attending antenatal

11. Prevalence of Anemia in Women
Percent of women of reproductive age (15-49) screened for hemoglobin levels with levels
110g/l for pregnant women, and 120g/l for non-pregnant women
Numerator: Number of women of reproductive age screened for haemoglobin levels
who have levels below 110 g/l (pregnant women) and 120 g/l (non-pregnant women)
during a specified period x 100
Denominator: Total number of women of reproductive age screened for haemoglobin
levels during the specified period
12. Percent of Obstetric and Gynecological Admissions Owing to Abortion
Percent of all cases admitted to service delivery points providing in-patient obstetric and
gynecological services, which are due to abortion (spontaneous and induced, but
excluding planned termination of pregnancy).
Numerator: Admissions for abortion-related complications x100
Denominator: All admissions, except those for planned termination of pregnancy

Percent of women interviewed in a community survey reporting having undergone

14. Prevalence of Infertility in Women
Percent of women of reproductive age (15-49) at risk of pregnancy (not pregnant,
sexually active, non-contracepting, and non-lactating) who report trying for a pregnancy
for two years or more.
Numerator: Number of women of reproductive age (15–49 years) at risk of becoming
pregnant (as defined above) who report trying unsuccessfully for a pregnancy for two

15. Reported Incidence of Urethritis in Men
Percent of men aged (15-49) interviewed in a community survey reporting episodes of
urethritis in the last 12 months.
Numerator: Number of men aged 15–49 years who reported having one or more
episodes of urethritis in the previous 12 months. X 100
Denominator: Number of men aged 15–49 years interviewed in the survey.

16. HIV Prevalence among Pregnant Women
Percent of pregnant women (15-24) attending antenatal clinics, whose blood has been
screened for HIV and who are sero-positive for HIV
Numerator: Number of HIV-positive blood samples taken from pregnant women aged
15–24 years* at selected antenatal clinics (sentinel surveillance sites) x 100
Denominator: Total number of blood samples taken from pregnant women aged 15–24
years from selected antenatal clinics that were tested for HIV *In the immediate post-
pubertal age group (i.e. the age group just beginning sexual activity virtually all prevalent
infections could be used as proxy for incident (new) infections.
17. Knowledge of HIV-related Prevention Practices
Percent of all respondents who correctly identify all three major ways of preventing the
sexual transmission of HIV and who reject three major misconceptions about HIV
transmission or prevention
Numerator: Number of survey respondents (women and men) who correctly identify all
three major ways of preventing sexual transmission of HIV, and who also reject all three
major misconceptions about HIV transmission or prevention x100
