Choking - Overview
What is Choking?
Choking happens when a foreign object gets stuck in your throat
or windpipe and obstructs your airways. In adults, it’s usually a
piece of food. In young children, it usually happens when they
swallow small objects. When choking, oxygen to the brain is cut
off, so administer first aid as soon as possible.

Choking - Signs And Symptoms
Choking - Signs And Symptoms
If you're an adult who's choking, you may notice things like:
• Coughing or gagging,
• Hand signals and panic (usually pointing to your throat),
• Sudden inability to talk,
• Your hands grabbing your throat.
This is called a universal choking sign and it's a way of letting people know you're
choking. You may also see:-
• Wheezing,
• Passing out and turning blue.
• Cyanosis, which is a blue color on the skin, usually starts around your face, mouth, and
fingernails.
• But you may also see other critical choking signs first. If you're dealing with an infant,
pay more attention to their behavior.
• Infants can't learn the universal choking sign, so it's best to focus on their behavior.
• You may also notice difficulty breathing, a weak cry, a cough, or both.

Choking – Actions to be taken
The universal sign for choking is hands clutched to the throat. If the
person does not give the signal, look for these indications:-
1. If you think you're choking, the first thing to look for is someone
with their hands around your neck.
2. If they don't give you the sign, check for other signs like not being
able to talk, having trouble breathing or making a lot of noise, not
being able to cough, having your skin, lips, and nails turn blue or
dark, and losing consciousness.

Choking – First- Aid
The Red Cross suggests a "five and five" approach to first
aid in the event of choking.
1. This approach consists of five back blows, which
are delivered between the shoulder blades by the
heel of the hand.
2. Additionally, abdominal thrusts, also known as
Heimlich manoeuvres, should be used to
dislodge the blockage.
3. The sequence should alternate between the five
blows and the five thrusts.

Choking – Abdominal Thrust On Someone Else
1. One should stand behind the person, wrap their arms around
their waist, and tip them forward slightly.
2. Then, with one hand, make a fist and place it slightly above their
navel.
3. With the other hand, grip the fist and press hard into their
abdomen, as if attempting to lift them up.
4. If necessary, a total of five abdominal thrusts should be
performed. If the obstruction is still not removed, the five and five
cycle should be repeated.
5. In the event of the person becoming unconscious, standard CPR
should be followed, including chest compressions, and rescue
breaths should be administered.
In order to perform an abdominal thrust (heimlich maneuver):-

Choking – Abdominal Thrust On Yourself
1. Call Local emergency number.
2. Then, although you'll be unable to effectively deliver back blows
to yourself, you can still perform abdominal thrusts to dislodge
the item.
3. Place a fist slightly above your navel.
4. Grasp your fist with the other hand and bend over a hard surface
— a countertop or chair will do.
5. Shove your fist inward and upward.

Choking – Clear Pregnant Women Airway
1. Place your hands slightly higher than in a traditional Heimlich
maneuver at the base of your breastbone, just below the junction
of your lowest ribs.
2. Push hard into your chest, as in a Heimlich manoeuvre, until the
obstruction is removed or you become unconscious.
3. Repeat this process until the food or obstruction is removed.

Choking – Clear Unconscious Person Airway
1. Position yourself behind the person in question, encircle them
around the waist, and tilt them slightly forward.
2. With one hand, form a fist and position it slightly above the navel.
With the other, grasp the hand and press firmly into the abdomen,
as if trying to lift the person.
3. If necessary, repeat the process five times, and if the obstruction
is not removed, repeat the cycle five times. If the person is
unconscious, standard resuscitation techniques should be
employed, such as chest compressions and rescue breaths.

Choking – Clear Choking Infant Airway
1. In order to resuscitate an infant, one should assume a seated position
with the infant held facedown on the thigh of the parent.
2. The heel of the hand should be used to strike the infant's middle back
five times, which should act as a lever to dislodge the object. If the back
blows do not work, the infant should be held face up on the forearm,
with the head lowered than the trunk.
3. If the chest compressions do not open the airway, two fingers should be
placed at the centre of the breastbone to provide five quick
compressions. If the infant does not resume breathing, the chest should
be repeated and emergency medical help should be called.
