To Whom It May Concern:
I hereby certify that Dr. Abdolreza Bahremandduring rus PhD programmeunder my supervision
participatedin an internationalproject entitled the TiszaRiver Project (EuropeanCommision- 5th
framework project) "Real-life scale integrated catchment roDdels for supporting water- and
environmentalmanagementdecisions".
The project kicked off in Budapest on January 15th 2002 and [mished in February 2005. A
consortium consisting of 11 participants carried out the project, co-ordinated by the Water
ResourcesResearchCentre VITUKI, Hungary. The participantswere partly national institutions,
organisationsandunivex:§itiesofthe Tisza Basin countries(Slovakia,Romaniaand Hungary,with
an outlook to Ukrainian subcontracting partners), partly leading research institutes and
universities of the Member Statesof the EuropeanUnion (Austria, Belgium, Germanyand the
United Kingdom). The overall objective of the project was to help savethe water resourcesand
ecological values with the help of integrated catchmentmanagementtools and to securethe
sustainableuse of the resourcesof the Tisza River Basin. More specifically, it consistedof an
integratedmanagementand modelling approachin which the managementobjectivesandtools of
wetland ecosystemrevitalisation would serve for other water- and environmental management
and social purposes as well. The other purposes included water quality improvement, flood
control, excess-inland water drainage, irrigation, non-point source laad control, fisheries,
landscapeprotection and recreational water uses. The project was also part of the European
Super-project(cluster ofprojects) called CATCHMOD, which combinesand harmonisessimilar
catchmentmodelling projectson a Ew'opeanlevel.htiD://www.tiszariver.com/
Dr. Abdolreza Bahremandwas actively involved in the modelling tasksof this project. Oneof the
main achievementswasthe developmentandapplicationof a distributedhydrologic model for the
flood prediction in the Tisza Basin. This model was developedby our VUB team to deal with
flood prediction in the very largebasinof the Tisza River, aswell asits sub-basinsasthe Hornad
river basin located in Slovakia. For this project Dr. Bahremand traveled several times to
Hunngary, Slovakia and Romania, in order to attendproject meetings, participate in field trips,
and presentthe results of the hydrological model at workshops. He and rus colleaguespublished
the resultsoftheir work in threeproject reportsandseveralpapers, givenbelow:
