REPRESENTATION IN POP MUSIC
MAGAZINES
By Amy
This font is serif font, this type of font would represent and show the lifestyle of the
band/artists because the fonts are quite bold and out there – this would help represent them
to be stylish and trendy.
The use of the bold text helps draw you to the important information. It also shows it to be
quite formal and direct as it shows to be chatty which would help represent the artists to be
quite friendly and sweet rather than being aggressive.
The colours used on the masthead is white. The white colour represents the artists as pure
and as themselves. The use of this colour would also contrast with the background colour
allowing it to stand out, which represents the artists as bold characters.
This main image represents the artists as
dominant figures in the pop genre through the
use of the long shot – it shows the girl bands
dominance as they are covering the majority of
the page.
The use of the bright clothing represents the
artists as outgoing and stylish. The outfits are
also stereotypical as dresses and sparkles are
associated with girls.
There is a clear focus on their faces – this shows
their reaction and relates to the main cover line
as „one of these girls has a secret‟. This would
represent the artists to be mischievous an also
stereotypical as girls would keep secrets and
have secrets and the images emphasises that as
they have are „shhing‟ and shown signs of
„gossiping‟.
The representation given through the use of this headline is
bold because of the use of the contrasting colours – black
and white against the colour pink.
The use of bold would also represent the artists to be bold
and outgoing.
The actual content of the headline represents the artists as
mysterious as it is saying “one of these girls have a
secret”, which is a conventional representation of the pop
genre.
The images of the left third represent the artists to be fun and crazy
through the use of the facial expressions. Also the use of a close up on
the images can represent them as the centre of attention as well as
shown in detail, giving the fun and outgoing representation.
The use of the main image on this page represent the
artist to be dominant because of the close up.
The use of the smaller images on the page represent
the artists to be fun, outgoing and adventurous.
The use of the bright red outfit, also again highlights
how they are outgoing and creates a good
representation of pop genre artists.
The use of the colours represents them in a
conventional way, by representing them as dominant
and pure as by the use of the colour pink and white.
This is because the text all contrasts and the colours
pink and white are on a black background and these
colours show these representations.

The colour pink also represents them as girly which is
a good representation as the magazine is mostly
female populated and the target audience are female.
The representation given through the use of this
pull quote is also bold as by the use of the black
background and the brightly coloured text.
The actual text in the pull quote represents the
artist as fun and energetic as its saying the
“silliest questions” asked and that she gave
“outrageous” answers, this is conventional
representation of the pop genre.
Also the use of the text of “Leona” and
“outrageous” in capitals and a direct colours
shows her to be bold.
