14. 13 Summary UOP | 2010 “ Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you .” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson Straight from the front line of urban America, Freedom Writers is an inspiring story of one fiercely determined teacher and her remarkable students. Gruwell played by Swank was an idealistic twenty-three-year-old English teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California; Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students, and a school system that had given up on their students.

Good day everyone, let us first start our presentation by asking a question. Why is teaching and incorporating the arts with standard educational curriculum critical to the success of every child’s education, and development? Well many of you may come up with some different and intriguing answers. Although many of them may be valid, however, this is why according to Andrea Mulder-Slater (2007, para. 2) {Andrea is one of the creators of Kinder Art® online}. It's been proven that early exposure to visual art, or drama promotes activity in the brain. Art helps children understand other subjects much more clearly—from math and science, to language arts and geography. Art nurtures inventiveness as it engages children in a process that aids in the development of self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, and self-motivation. Participating in art activities helps children to gain the tools necessary for understanding human experience, adapting to and respecting others' ways of working and thinking, developing creative problem-solving skills, and communicating thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways. With this in mind, our presentation focuses on a movie in which portrays why teaching and incorporating the arts with standard educational curriculum is not only crucial, but it is also very important in the development of children. It should be standard practice, and that it should be part of any educational systems vision, mission, and long-term goals. In other words, the importance should never be understated, nor should it be under-valued. Topics being discussed in our presentation are Synopsis of Freedom Writers (2007). The real Freedom Writers. Erin Gruwell, the teacher responsible for the academic miracle; Inspiration behind the Miracle. Analysis of the Movie. We will answer 5-Relevant Questions in relation to education and the arts as it is portrayed in the movie. Ending with a Summary of our presentation. At the end of our presentation there will be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Let us begin our presentation…
