1. Day report 1
The first day report, the first news of the Buza from Shanghai. So much has happened already and time really
flies. We started at the campus from where a bus, sponsored by Herman van der Meulen, took us to Schiphol.
The flight with Emirates was great and for a change the food on board was really nice. After arrival there was a
bus waiting for us at the airport which took us directly to the hotel. All this travelling made us very happy to
find clean rooms and a shower. Not a lot happened afterwards, everybody was tired from the trip and our beds
provided a warm welcome in Shanghai.
Thursday 23 September 2010
7.30 Breakfast and a taxi to Fudan University where professor Yu Hai gave a very enthu-
siastic lecture about the Historical background of Economical developments and city
planning in Shanghai. This interesting lecture gave a lot of insight in this vibrant city and
helped the students to become passionate about the city. In the evening we went to Bar
Rouge, an exclusive bar on top of a building with view on Pudong, to relax, evaluate the
day while working on the group feeling and get a taste of the Shanghai night life.
Friday 24 September 2010
8.30 Also Shanghai knows the slogan “work hard, Play hard” and they really work hard.
None of us has been able to wake early enough to see the start of the day but at 7.00 the city
is already fully awake. According to Maurice Pourchez, the vice-consul of the Dutch General
Consulate, the „Shanghai-minute„ is equal to 5 Dutch minutes. And it seems to hold true. Tai-
lored suits can be made in 5 days and your tailored shirt will be back in 2 days. Before the
opening of the Expo Shanghai needed to have 7 metro lines which were build within 2 year,
in a city of about 20 million people this is an amazing achievement and it makes you wonder
about some cities in the Netherlands. Today we visited the world Expo which in itself is an-
other great achievement of the Chinese way of working. A complex the size of a regular
Dutch city was build and will be open for only 6 months.
Until now everything has worked out and apart from some occasional taxi malfunc-
tions which are all “part of the experience” everything goes according to the plan.
There are is still a lot more coming up but for now:
X-je Shanghai!
