With the recent terrorist attack in Paris, it has been clearly shown to everyone that terrorism has
no nationality, tribe or region. There has been no doubt that the global military system is gradually
losing its grip in the multifaceted fight against terrorism. Hours after America announced a
successful airstrike against one of the most wanted terrorist on the planet, the fearless Jihadi John,
the conflicting and sad story of the killing of over 150 people in yet another terrorist attack hit the
headlines.
Global terrorism is extreme both in its lack of realistic goals and its cynical exploitation of the
vulnerability of nation’s security. After the attack, the French government has promised to attack
its enemies “ruthlessly”. That shows to you that the purpose of terrorism is not just in the violent
act but its ability to inflame, divide and produce consequences that justify further terror. Some
people residing in Lagos, the center of economic activity of the nation, might distract themselves
from the fear of terrorism by boosting of Lagos’ immunity against any form of terrorism by saying
“they can’t come to Lagos”. But it would be quite interesting to know that reports has shown that
Lagos has one of the most porous borders in the continent. Nobody cares to know who enters or
leaves the city. In Lagos, you mind your business, and no one actually takes cognizance of what is
going on in their various environment. Because they have not spread their wings to this city
does not mean they don’t have a plan to attack.
Everyone is worried about stopping terrorism but the only way to really stop this life-threatening
act is not to start it at all. Once it is started, any bid to stop it would definitely generate a chain
reaction of further destruction. Much has been accomplished during the last tenure in the campaign
against terrorism and this present government is also trying every possible means to put an end to
terrorism in the nation. However, we still have to use every tool at our disposal to wage war against
any act that preaches or finances terrorism in our locality.
It’s good to nurture our children to believe in some religious ideologies but we must also take time
to make a close watch on them when it’s getting to the extreme. The internet age has made it very
easy for some terrorist groups to recruit people online, so we must be aware of the presence of any
of our family members on various media platforms. Equating all Muslims with terrorism is stupid
and wrong, but I would rather implore our Muslim brothers to make a proper survey of the after-
school Muslim classes you enroll your wards because some of these schools tend to inflict these
crazy ideologies in them.
Lastly, the best way to fight terrorism is by fighting the basic needs of humanity, because hunger,
poverty and lack of proper education perpetuate crime. For the very fact that you have the
abundance of wealth enough to cater for your family should give you much reason to start a welfare
program in your community. The government can’t carry the burden of taking care of all internally
displaced person in the north alone, so we the citizens must stretch forth our hands of love to the
needy around us. It’s good to fund our religious institutions but the nation needs more from us in
this challenging period to break away from the shackles of poverty which has a strong link with
terrorism.
There is no life to be found in violence. Terrorism should be seen from a perspective that is not
narrowed to caste, creed, and religion. The struggle for a secured nation will require vigilance,
perseverance and sacrifice. Let’s support our troops by becoming very vigilant to things that happen
around our neighborhood and within the household for our mission to keep Nigeria immune from
all forms of Terrorism become a reality. You can start the chain by sharing this article with your
friends and family on various social media platform. The road to a better Nigeria begins with
you…….ABRAHAM FEMI ABRAHM.
