Gestalt's law
1. Gestalt’s law
ABHIJIT PANDIT-7TH SEM
Gestalt’s law are laws of visual perception which
helps us understand how we perceive and
process visual information
There are six principles under Gestalt’s law
Figure/ground
Proximity
Continuity
Closure
Similarity
Symmetry
2. Figure and ground / figure to ground
Figure and ground
When we see any image with multiple
objects, we automatically perceive one
of them as being the foreground and
one as background.
We automatically perceive this color
block as being in the foreground
Figure to ground
A relationship between two objects is
also established upon looking at an
image.
In this painting, we perceive this figure as being distant
while the figure is actually painted small in relation to its
surrounding in the paper.
3. Proximity
Upon seeing a visual with multiple
objects we always group objects which
are closer to each other and perceive
them as connected
Due to the mouse being closer to the laptop on
left, we perceive the mouse to be connected to
that laptop and not the laptop on the right.
4. Continuity
Upon seeing an image, if a figure is
incomplete but falls on the same line or
curve we tend to continue that line or
curve.
In this image, part of the body of insect is hidden behind
nail but we perceive the parts on both side of the nail as
being connected as if the shape is continuing.
5. Closure
Upon seeing a figure that may not be
totally complete but we tend to see the
image as a complete closed figure.
In this image, part of the body of the cat is merging with
the black background but still we perceive the image by
closing the shape of the cat.
6. Similarity
Upon seeing a visual we always tend to group
objects if they are similar on their basis of
color, shape,size e.t.c
Upon looking at
this chess board
we perceive
black pieces as
different group
and white
pieces as
different group
though the
pieces are
scattered all
over the board.
Looking at this image
we group the white
cloth added as being
similar to the
Hollywood sign and
the dark cloth added
is perceived similar to
the dark green
background hence
creating the
hollyweed sign.
7. Symmetry
There is a tendency of us to always favour symmetrical
figures, we perceive symmetrical figures as good and
assymetrical figures as not so good.
The image on the left is a leaf
which is symmetrical which we
perceive as being good, on the
right is an image of assymetrical
leaf which is perceived as not
being so good.
