Background
On 7th January, 1983 Hans Tholstrup and Larry Perkins arrived at
the steps of the Sydney Opera House having driven from Perth in
20 days averaging 23 km/hr.
Hans felt that a race was the answer and thus the energy R&D
event, the World Solar Challenge, was born in Australia .

Following the 1996 event, the
State of South Australia took
over the event.
The 1999 event saw 43 teams
from 14 countries traverse the
continent, and the Australian
"Aurora" team won the event.
