In order to successful scale any method or practice, it has to have some basis in theory. This presentation will use insights from complex adaptive systems theory and the cognitive sciences to lay a foundation for that theory. Seeing software development as a problem of knowledge management, the theory will elaborate a understanding of applications as the emergent property of a co-evolutionary interactions between technology capability and unarticulated user requirements. Having established a basic theory a range of methods and tools will be elaborated. These include: - Narrative based approaches to requirements capture (not to be confused with Story telling or story boarding) which gather thousands of fragmented self-signified anecdotes relating to real and imagined needs within a user community and allow interpretation and integration into project planning. - Approaches to project planning and implementation that focus on the creation of self-organising teams of specialists and users to create novel approaches, supported by evidence to previously intractable problems. This is particularly relevant to the 5-10% of any major project which creates 95-90% of the grief. - The integration of tools such as blogs, wiki's etc into the development environment. Too often corporate environments over-constrain those tools into over rigid structures which destroy their utility.

A case study in introducing Rails into a public NASA Earth Science system presented by Dan Pilone and Jason Gilman at RailsConf 2011. Despite a broad investment in Java, we conducted a survey of modern development technologies including Flex, Django, JSF2 and Rails. We chose to move forward using Ruby on Rails with JRuby. This presentation discusses our experiences, including technical, process, and psychological, using RoR on a production system.

Session slides from Future Insights Live, Vegas 2015: https://futureinsightslive.com/las-vegas-2015/ Reliability and uptime are a critical aspect to any product. It doesn't matter how beautiful the user interface is, how amazing a feature is, or stunning a cutting edge product is if its down. We live in a world where our users expect the products we make to work anytime, every time, all the time. Chaos driven development is the discipline to start with failure scenarios and design our products with failure in mind. It forces us to understand our users, minimum viable product and what drives our businesses in order to architect the systems which we build our product's foundation on. Innovation is about navigating tradeoffs, chaos driven development helps us both understand and be intentional about the tradeoffs we make. Bruce takes a look at the radical strategies Netflix applies to ensure a reliable customer experience. Why chaos, how chaos, what chaos and the results.

Organizations are messy places: politics thwart progress, departmental squabbles are status quo, and decision-making often takes months. This chaos makes its way right to our websites, filling them with crap users don't want, need, or sometimes even understand. We’re practicing content strategy now, so what gives? Why are we still designing around all this clutter and corporate-speak? Because strategy documents and style rules alone won’t make people actually produce content that meets users’ needs and aligns with our designs. In this talk, you’ll hear what will: embracing (okay, tolerating) content chaos, instead of anguishing over imperfections. You'll learn strategic approaches for defining meaningful content problems in your organization—and solving them one at a time.

Chaos theory is a mathematical field of study which states that non-linear dynamical systems that are seemingly random are actually deterministic from much simpler equations. The phenomenon of Chaos theory was introduced to the modern world by Edward Lorenz in 1972 with conceptualization of ‘Butterfly Effect’. As chaos theory was developed by inputs of various mathematicians and scientists, it found applications in a large number of scientific fields. The purpose of the project is the interpretation of chaos theory which is not as familiar as other theories. Everything in the universe is in some way or the other under control of Chaos or product of Chaos. Every motion, behavior or tendency can be explained by Chaos Theory. The prime objective of it is the illustration of Chaos Theory and Chaotic behavior. This project includes origin, history, fields of application, real life application and limitations of Chaos Theory. It explores understanding complexity and dynamics of Chaos.
