A fluorescent lamp is a type of gas-discharge lamp that uses electricity to excite mercury vapor which produces short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light. The lamp consists of a glass tube coated with phosphors that glow when exposed to the ultraviolet light from the excited mercury vapor. Fluorescent lamps are more energy efficient than incandescent lamps and have a longer lifetime.
