Bm8 Get Together 2014 Normandy Trip Planning
1. Bm8 Get Together 2014
Hi everyone,
Here is what I propose as an organization to our meeting next year. As you know, we decided
to go in Normandy this time. It is only a proposal, I expect feedback from you, tips, ideas,
desires...
In terms of dates, I chose according to the days of tide Mont St Michel (see below)
The 70th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy
« June 5 to August 21, 2014, Normandy celebrate with pomp and emotion, the 70th
anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. This anniversary will be a time of
contemplation and communion national and international.
The commemoration of the landing of June 6, 1944 is a traditional event for the Lower
Normandy region. It is especially during the five-year and ten international resonance which is
particularly marked anniversaries. Because it will likely be the last decennial anniversary in the
presence of actors and witnesses to these events, it will take a special dimension when hosting
for the last time as part of a great birthday still a significant number of those who are the
custodians of the "living memory», the emotion will be intense.
This anniversary will be a wonderful time for the transmission of memory and sharing of
fundamental values for which so many young men went to the supreme sacrifice: peace,
freedom, brotherhood, dignity of man.
The presence of the liberators of Normandy, France and Europe will be a new opportunity to
show our undying gratitude and associate with them, youth at various commemorative time
to make this event a step essential in the memorial transmission, already various educational
initiatives emerging in the entire region.
The landing of June 6 is a particular highlight of the Anglo-Saxon memory. This is why the 70th
anniversary will also include a message of thanks and unwavering friendship sent by the French
people to the British, Americans and Canadians.
We also express our deep gratitude to the Polish, Dutch, Belgians, Australians, Greeks,
Luxembourg, Norway, Czechs, Slovaks, New Zealand and Danish liberators of France, which
will also have a place in the commemoration and memory initiatives.
2. The choice of sector of Sword Beach to host the international ceremony June 6, 2014 will also
pay tribute to the 177 men of the Commando Kieffer, who were the only French elements to
take part in land operations on D-Day, along with their British comrades.
Moreover, as in 2004, the anniversary will also be a highlight for Franco-German reconciliation,
in the continuity of the Elysée Treaty.
Finally, this anniversary is also an opportunity to discuss the plight of civilians who have paid a
very heavy price for the liberation of Normandy and France and to pay tribute to the heroism
of the Norman population suffered in 1944. Beside the necessary tribute to military casualties,
it is indeed important to remember the men and women who were randomly and military
strategies in the fighting, trapped in a deluge of fire.
During the spring and summer of 2014, the world's eyes will be on the Normandy, this is an
opportunity to show the world its dynamism, its strengths and its commitment to build the
future without forgetting history. »1

3. Friday 06/13/14 – Tour of Mont-Saint-Michel
It would be nice to get all in the morning if possible. Given the number of things that we can
visit and the short time available on a weekend, and given also the fact that for many of us it
will be a long trip only for a short weekend, it must make the most!
I propose that we give a first appointment between 14:30 and 15:00 in Caen, which is in my
opinion, our residence for the weekend.
Check out between 15:30 or 16h

It is extremely dangerous to venture alone into the bay including the immediate vicinity of
Mont-Saint-Michel.
On this schedule, only the periods during which the phenomenon of the tide is visible
are indicated.

7. Saturday 06/14/14 – Official Ceremonies
« The schedule of official events is not yet known at this time.
Kader Arif, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Defence, in charge of veterans, announced
June 6, 2013 that it is SWORD, which runs from Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer in Ouistreham, which host
the international celebration of the 70th anniversary D-Day and the Battle of Normandy on
June 6, 2014.
He also announced that the beaches of Juno and Omaha each welcome a large binational
ceremony.
A preliminary program of the ceremonies will be available in fall 2013. »2
I think we need to wait some time to organize the day of Saturday depending on the program
of the official ceremonies will be soon available.
