8 core commitments to be successful
1. 8 Core Commitments to be successful
Aki Wood, of Empower Network, recently reminded all members what the 8 core commitments are if
you want to be successful.
What do core commitments mean?
You will not find a definition for core commitments in the dictionary. The definition I came across is a
great one. It is written by Robert Ferguson.
However, BusinessDictionary.com would suggest the use of the term Commitment simply applies to the
financial arrangement between a borrower and lender. If this is true, then clearly some organizations
are addressing the core value of Commitment as long as they pay their bills on time – or collect money
from borrowers in a timely fashion.
There appears to be more meaning to the word commitment that what is in the dictionary. Making
promises to others and to ourselves are a daily part of our lives. This is the easy part. Being committed
to follow through with your core commitments is where the challenge lies.
How core commitments are initiated?
As with anything you do, you need to have a plan. First, stop and think! Ask yourselves a few very basic
questions? If you do not ask questions, you will not find answers. And these are questions you have to
ask yourself and these are also the same questions that you will need to find the answers to yourself. No
one can aid you in this.
Questions that I usually ask myself:
How long have I been doing what I have been doing?
What have I achieved so far?
Am I happy with what I have achieved?
Be very candid with yourself. If your answers are not what you were expecting, then you need to think
some more...
Should I continue doing what I am doing if I am not getting the results that I want?
You also need to verify what you want? Do you still want the same things? People evolve and wants may
change over time.
Next, brainstorm all those answers and come up with a list of core commitments.
Today is thinking day! If thinking is difficult and it is most of the time in these circumstances, get your
thoughts on paper. Write your questions and your answers. You might not get your answers in a
moment... remember your questions and keep thinking and the answers will come to you. Here you go
again:
What is it that I want,
Why do I want what I want,
2. How am I going to get what I want and,
When will I actually get what I want?
If you have done the above, you already have a clear goal and plan and a time frame to achieve that
goal. Some goals however, are big and overwhelming when you look at them.
A plan on paper is always good, if you do not like to write on paper, put it in a word document. What
you will find helpful if your plan overwhelms you, is to break it into small chunks that will be more
manageable. You will also want to determine your time line based on each individual chunk. Each time
you achieve a chunk of that master plan, you would have reached a milestone. Remember to celebrate
each time since each milestone is taking you closer to the ultimate goal. If things are not going as
planned, you will need to stop and reassess. Scrutinize your strategies and modify or change them
depending on the situation. Regular checks will help you measure whether you are on track and
whether you are fully engaged in your core commitments.
Implement your core commitments to your business plan
Now that your plan is all laid out, you can see it, you have researched it and you can almost feel it in
your blood. You feel confident about it. It’s time to get started. You are all powered up and excited. This
attitude has to prevail at all time, it has to become your new way of thinking, to put it more strongly,
your new way of being. You are reaching out to your higher self and making the attempt to reach your
potential. This conscious self-transformation is very important. There is no turning back. In 90 days from
now or a year from now, you remain as committed as you were on day one. It is through adhering to
your core commitments and perseverance that you will succeed. You need to remain focused. To use
the words, my parents used, you need to be disciplined.
Going back to what Aki Wood was talking about, as an Empower Network Member, the first core
commitment is obvious: you have signed in and are a member:

3. Doing all of the above can make you money. More importantly though, it will teach you many sets of
skills that you can apply in your personal life as well as in your business life. You will learn skills that you
can teach your children or your parents, why not. At the end of the day, even if you do not happen to
have a breakthrough, you will have learned skills and lessons that will remain with you for the rest of
your life. There is no guarantee in any business. There is always a risk; the bigger the risk, as the saying
goes, the bigger the reward.
If you fail, there is no shame in it. You will obviously be upset for a while. You will beat yourself up... but
you cannot do that for ever. You will get up one day and go back to the rubles just like the firefighters
visit a devastated scene after the fact and look for explanations as to what caused the fire. You will look
in your books, you will examine behaviors, consider decisions made and their timings, etc. and believe
me, and you will discover things that will humble you. You will find the explanations and you will not be
upset any more. Your enthusiasm will return. You will be ready to take that next step. Here is your
opportunity, now that you are wiser with the lessons you have learned, to start over. Remember your
core commitments.
It is up to you to decide what you want to do. You are responsible for your actions.
