The Urban Mobility Initiative is holding an innovation contest open to NUS students to develop ideas and prototypes that can improve urban transportation. There are two categories: Idea Development, which requires submitting a report, and Prototype Development, which requires both a report and a functioning prototype. Winners will receive prize money and top entrants may get funding to further develop their product with industry partners. The deadline to submit entries is July 27th and interested students can register on the UMI Facebook page.

Details of the contest
• The purpose of this contest is to uncover talents who
are interested in urban transportation and mobility
amongst the student population of NUS. UMI, in
collaboration with NCS and MHIESA hopes to explore
valuable ideas from the students and work with the
students to shape the future of urban mobility in the
world.
• The contest will be separated into 2 categories- Idea
Development Contest and Prototype Development
Contest, and a bonus round. Interested participants
can choose to participate in either of these categories.

The UMI Innovation Contest comprises 2 categories
and a bonus round:
Idea Development Competition- Participants are
required to brainstorm and create a new feasible
product that can improve urban mobility in today’s
world. The idea/concept of the product has to be
submitted in the form of a report and/or video, and it
has to include full details of how the product will
work, how it will be produced, and how will it benefit
urban mobility. There is no need to produce a
prototype for the idea. The report and/or video will be
judged. The report should not be longer than 10,000
words.

The UMI Innovation Contest comprises 2 categories
and a bonus round:
Prototype Development Competition- Participants are

product, and the report has to include full details of
how the product will work and how will it benefit urban
mobility. On top of the report, a prototype with
complete functionality has to be developed and
submitted. Both the report and the prototype
submitted will be judged. The report should not be

The UMI Innovation Contest comprises 2 categories
and a bonus round:
Bonus Round- After the whole competition, participants
who produced the top entries will be invited to
participate in the bonus round. In this bonus
round, participants will be invited to a joint
collaboration with MHIESA or NCS, whereby they will
be given the chance to develop the products further
on an industrial scale together with the engineers
from the companies. The development of their
product will be fully funded. However, they may be
required to go through formal undertaking/contract
with the respective companies.

Market- Is there potentially a sizeable and/or clearly defined
targeted group that the Product is designed for? How well will it
appeal to the targeted market?
Originality- How original the product is? What is the product's
unique selling proposition (USP)? Are there similar products
currently in the market?
Functionality- Is the Product closely related to Urban Mobility?
Have the functions of the Product provided improvements in the
field of Urban Mobility? How well does it relate to Urban Mobility?
Report- Has the report covered the essence of the product? Was

• 50% will be judged based on the idea, and 50% will be judged based on the
prototype submitted.
Impact- What does the product help people to do? What are the alternatives users

Product is designed for? How well will it appeal to the targeted market?
Originality- How original the product is? What is the product's unique selling

Viral Potential- Is the Product indispensible? Will it be used by users frequently?

How to Submit your Entry:
The deadline for Submission is 27 July 2012 at 11:59:59hrs. Late
submissions will not be entertained.
For ‘Idea Development Contest’, the report should be submitted in
hard copy (printed) together with soft copy (.doc file) to UMI office.
For ‘Prototype Development Contest’, the prototype, together with
the report should be submitted to UMI office. The report should be
submitted in both hard copy (printed) and soft copy (.doc file).
