Revolutionary solar-power desalination plant
could provide cheaper option, but it needs space
The Desalination plant to produce 10,000-liters-per-day was developed by
The Solar Energy Harnessing Centre at IIT Madras in Chennai
and the Ministry of Earth Sciences funded the Rs1.22 crore ($175,000) experimental
project.
South Africa to construct its US $1m first solar-powered desal plant
The solar-powered desalination plant will produce water at a cost of US $1 a
kiloliter deliver 100 kilo liters of fresh water daily.
The installed cost of desalination plants is approximately $1m for every 1,000 cubic meters
per day of installed capacity. Therefore, a large scale desalination plant serving 300,000
people typically costs in the region of $100 million. The costs of infrastructure to distribute
water must be added to this
