What Is DCIS Breast
Cancer
DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) breast cancer or intraductal carcinoma is
cancer that occurs within the milk ducts of the breast. It is the most
common type of pre-cancer and non-invasive breast cancer in women. As
it is non-invasive, the cancer cells are entirely contained within the milk
duct area, and are in fact the earliest form of breast cancer.
Around 20% of the 45,500 breast cancer cases diagnosed in the UK
annually are attributed to DCIS. It is usually discovered in a mammogram
as it rarely shows up as a lump.
The causes of DCIS are varied. As with most cases, ageing is a
contributory factor, with diagnoses under the age of 35 rare. Other risk
factors include: starting your period at a younger age, a late menopause,
having children later in life, a family history of breast cancer, being
overweight and prolonged over indulgence in alcohol.
Since DCIS breast cancer is such an early form of the disease, the physical
signs can be difficult to identify. In fact, most cases are discovered by
mammogram. Some women will experience the following signs of DCIS:
breast lump, discharge from the nipple and a rash on the nipple.
