Money managers have increased their long positions in gold, as the price of gold has risen sharply over the past week. Data from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission shows that hedge funds increased their net-long position in gold futures and options by 26% as of July 23rd. Gold prices rose over 8.5% in July, heading for the largest monthly gain since January 2012, as comments from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke reduced expectations of imminent reductions in bond purchases. Shares of Canadian oil company AOS have risen 100% in a week due to rising heavy oil prices, exploration opportunities in Africa, and a government payout related to its Clearwater project. While prices have risen, analysts say the stock remains

BULLION
Money managers have increased their long
bets on the yellow metal considering sharp
rally seen in the metal over the past one
week. The gold prices have shown uptrend in
recent weeks, which prompted hedge funds
to take long positions in recent data shared
by the US commodities regulator.
The US Commodity Futures Trading
Commission data showed that money
managers increased their net-long position by
26% to 70,067 futures and options as of July
23.
The fourth consecutive weekly gain is the
longest streak since October. Bullish wagers
across 18 U.S.-traded commodities gained 7.4
percent to 615,140. Investors more than
doubled bets on lower corn prices to a record
net-short holding.
Gold futures gained by over 8.5 % in July,
heading for the largest monthly gain since
January 2012, as Fed Chairman Ben S.
Bernanke damped speculation that a cut in
bond purchases is imminent, a Bloomberg
report noted.
MARKET NEWS
ENERGY
AOS holds 106 bitumen leases in the Athabasca oil
sands region of northeast Alberta, with three
projects: Clearwater, Grand Rapids, Algar Lake and
MacKay. The report notes that a week ago, if one
had dumped a couple grand into AOS, he would
have gotten a 100% return.
As per a report by Oilprice.com, the share prices
will keep rising as they move up to cash break up
value at least, and on speculation from near term
drilling in Namibia and the mouth-watering
“sleeper asset”—Algar Lake, which is a key
exploration area that could very well turn out to be
Canada’s next supergiant deposit, on the scale of
Pelican Lake.
AOS stock shot up 100% in a week buoyed by rising
heavy oil prices, strategic positioning in Africa and
the government payout over Clearwater.
But we can be even more forward thinking that
this. The stock price is still trading at half of
expected cash value alone, so this is not likely the
peak for AOS. “But what we really like here is not
just the exploration potential, but how AOS has
handled this acreage so far: Thanks to a farm-out
deal, AOS isn’t paying anything to have five wells
drilled here, and it will still retain 25%-49% of the
asset, which could be a potential cold-flow play
and this would be a game-changer for the
company,” the report said.
