room that they belong in and what is in the box. You should
also label whether the box is fragile and note which side of
the box is the top. Write this information on the side of the

3. When packing, it can be helpful to pack one room at a
time, but some people prefer to start out by packing the
things that they don't use often and then the things that
are used more frequently. It is best not to mix items from
multiple rooms in the same box, however. Aim to keep
each box at a weight of less than 50 pounds, and stack
boxes of similar size and shape together when possible.
Speaking of boxes, it is often a good idea to buy moving
boxes, even though you can sometimes get boxes for free
from the recycling or from businesses, friends and
neighbors. When you buy moving boxes, you will know that
they are sturdy enough for your purposes, and you can buy
specialty boxes made for moving certain items that can be
difficult to pack in regular boxes. Although it can add to

likely that your belongings will be damaged.

4. As you pack your boxes, make sure to provide plenty of
padding, especially for fragile items, which should be
wrapped individually in tissue paper or newspaper. Pack
the heaviest items in the bottom of the box, then put
lighter items on top. Make sure that each box is full but
that it can still close with the top flat. If it isn't full, the top
of the box will bend inward and it is more likely items
inside will be squished. Fill in any gaps in the box with
padding, such as soft towels or lightweight blankets. You
can even use clothing if you want to save on space and
limit the amount of paper you waste in the process of your
move.
