2. “…Research for art and design…what Picasso considered was the
gathering of reference materials rather than research proper.
Research where the end product is an artefact – where the thinking
is, so to speak, embodied in the artefact, where the goal is not
primarily communicable knowledge in the sense of verbal
communication, but in the sense of visual or iconic or imagistic
communication.”

AMBITIONS
14. - A 2d or 3d arrangement of small units.
- A symmetrical pattern (or arrangement) of objects or
images
- A grid is a means to formalise a space, according to
an abstract ideal. It allows no deviation, no crossing
over the line.
- A grid is a dreary construction which attempts to
support the cult of incessant activity and infinite
progress.
- Columns and Rows
- Lines with equal gaps vertically and horizontally later
over an image or surface in order to break down an
image/map/surface into geometric sectors.
- A box of squares.
THINKING OF AN AUDIENCE –
QUESTIONNAIRE
A design should have some tension and some
expression in itself. I like to compare it with the lines on
a football field. It is a strict grid. In this grid you play a
game and these can be nice games or very boring
games.
WIM CROUWEL
Grids do not exist in a vacuum. They exist in relation to
the content. We never start with a grid. We start with an
idea which is then translated into a form, a structure.
LINDA VAN DEURSEN
To say a grid is limiting is to say that language is
limiting, or typography is limiting. It is up to us to use
these media critically or passively.
ELLEN LUPTON
Order is the actual key of life.
LE CORBUSIER
Where there is no order, there is chaos.
FRA LUCA PACIOLI
Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing left to
add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

16. “In Babylonian creation myth, God turned men out like bricks from
clay molds. It was men who built bricks into walls. The first grid, the
brick wall, easily evokes associations with the human body.”
